action of the committee, In view of
the hearing yesterday afternoon, was
surprising to those who were not ac-
ualnted with the Ins and outs of
committee lobbying.
The showing made for Meigs was
weak, but the attorney for that
proposition, Mr. Cox, of Camllln,
stated that Meigs first started tho
new county movement and named It
Hansell, and that their thunder was
stolen and their name taken for the
Pelham proposition.
| Judge I. A. Bush and Hon. E. W
i ] Davis, of Camilla, both spoke
against both propositions, and their
arguments were forefully delivered
and to the point. The Colquitt
county folks were represented by
the Legislator, Mr. Carlton, who
gnve some of his time to Hon, W'al-
ter Roddenbery, of Grady, who made
one of the most telling arguments
of the afternoon and presented five
residents of the section Involved,
who emphatically and earnestly beg
ged not to be cut off Into any new
county.
Judge H. W. Hopkins represented
Thomas and his talk was very force
ful and intensely Interesting. He
stated that he ran on an antl-new
county platform and that he was
elected by big majorities In the dls- j
trlcts of Meigs, Ellabelle and Och-j
locknee, and that the only man who
would not run on that platform was
defeated In the county.
Judge Spence spoke for Pelham
and also Mr. J. L. Hand. They were
both earnest In their contention that
tho new county of Hansell. with Pel
ham should be recommended by the
committee in their roport.
