Kl’K, IOWA TUESDAY — WILL GENERATE THOUSANDS OF HOUSE-POWER. Dear. Mr. Jerger: I have Just re ceived my paper. In which 1 have notice an account of the trouble into which I was drawn at Pavo last Tuesday night. Its very embarrassing to me, and especially in my enfeebled condi tion, to have to correct the newspa per story concerning the affair. I have done all that I could to keep the matter out of the newspapers, knowing full well as I do, that Its the exception rather than the rule, that newspaper, try hard as It may, cannot get the truth of such a dirty affair. I know you have no desire to do me an Injustice, therefore I feel sure that you will publish my state ment which sets forth the facts In the case, and as you will see, hasn't the least semblance of the story In Wednesday’s Issue. , The story Is headed, “Disagreement In Pavo came near causing death of Minister,” and goes on leaving the Impression that Carrington and I were In the drug store; that we had a dispute, and that he knocked me through a show-case, cutting me badly. This account, Mr. Jerger, Is far from the truth. Mr. W. B— Rnihinif-a, deacon -lh. the church at Pavo, was walking with me when the assault was made and will corroborate the following account of the shameful affair: Mr. Rushin and I were on our way to church, walking hurriedly along the sidewalk, and Just ns wc got j near the door of Gardner’s drug store, a man whom neither of us recognized, at the time, came dash ing upon us, a*nd before either of us had time to speak, I was struck a Mow on the head wtlh a closed knife, a pair of knocks, or some sort or hard Instrument. AND THIS MAY CHANGE THE COMPLEXION OF THE 8ITUA. TION AT WASHINGTON. Washington, Aug. 23.—Develop ments in the Mexican situation were moving swiftly today toward a point where officials were expected to de termine whether or not President Wilson would read his messnge to Congress Tuesday. Direct advices from Mexico City, are to the effect that Provisional President Huerta wishes to recon sider his rejection of the American proposals, before President Wilson laid bare before the world the ne gotiations. This news has changed the situation here somewhat. President Wilson interrupted work bn his message long enough’ today to take a few hours of recreation on the golf links. This Is his usual week-end diversion, and he seldom permits anything to Interfere with It. As soon as he had gotten fixed, he saw another snake lying’ directly in front of him and com pletely barring his way from nn- j der the house. He remained fully fifteen minutes on the pipes, wait ing for something to happen, and unable to get to anything with which he could kill the snakes. Finally one of the snakes cr»wle4 out and went away Into the bushed’ Mr. Rogers very carefully climbed down quickly, grabbed a stick, on which the first rattler had been lay- - lng. and under the bouse managed to kill the remaining snake, which was at that time colled and rattling furiously. The other was not seen. The snake killed was over five feet long, and Mr. Rogers' escape was al most miraculous. J. X. Carter, Wife and Daughter, in Colorado At This Time.
