Cabbage plants are dim cult and expensive to grow in the
late summer and early fall, which makes it necessary to charge
a little more for them. Cabbage is scarce and high now, and
we predict that a patch of nice winter cabbage will bring its
owner a handsome profit.

pear more and more doubtful that
the Governor could conscientiously
"rant a complete pardon.
Governor Slaton’s attitude in tiie
case is made absolutely plain by his
executive order.
"I believe the evidence shows the j
guilt of Dr. McXaughton,” ho says
point-blank in a final paragraph, but
in another place he says:
“The conviction was on circum
stantial evidence and one Judge of
the Supreme .court did not believe it
excluded every reasonable doubt.
Two prison commissioners recom
mended a pardon and one life im
prisonment. The expert testimony
offered since the trial impresses the
fallibility of human judgment.”
In the light of such considera
tions, it may he said, the action
the Governor was almost
ble.

the time the department got there
the entire house was burning. They
made a valiant effort to save It. but
to no avail, as the water they had
was so short of what was necessary, :
as to he almost a farce. The con-1
tents of the homo were burned, with
the exception of a few clothes.
Mr. Smith had five hundred
lars on the house and two fifty on
the furnishings In the Farmers’ Mu
tual. This will not nearly cover his
loss. It Is said to have caught from
the kitchen roof.
Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Shipp, of Moul

visitors here yesterday.
