The elite of the newspaper was
March 9th, 1883, the issue which
contained the ae ount'of the funer
al of the former vice president of
the Confederacy, Alexander H.
Stephens. At that time Room No.
10, at 40 Marietta street was a niod-
wst and somewhat dusty office, next
door to the old Pijou theatre, in the
ramshackle brick building which
stands there to this day. The shin
gle which hung above the door, re
membered by old Atlanta, was very
like some of the shingles which hang
there now. It was there that two
ambitious young lawyers sought
their fortune nearly thirty years
ago. Very little fortune ever came
lo either of them while they practic
ed law in Atlanta. Later their ways
