New York. Nov. 7.—The unusual
plea of a man in the nl ht con r t here
early today got him off s'’o f t free, of
the charge of. drunkenness. The
prisoner was George L. Dolbert. a
physician. He said he was a student
of alcoholism, and only drank whis
key to learn its "scientific effects.”
The presiding magistrate accepted
the plea, and discharged the pris
oner on the one condition that all
his future experiments along the
same line be conducted at hie home.

mediately that they would file an
amendment to their petition for
habeas corpus, application for which
was made soon after Thaw was nr

petition was based on the allega
tion that Thaw was indi ted for

grand Jury. Because the extradition
was granted by Governor Felkner,
on the strength of the New York
county indictment, it will be neces
sary to amend the petition.
Thaw was not present when Gov
