pect was widely discussed among
government officials here today, in
connection with the recent execution
of William S. Benton, at Juarez.
Many officials have expressed the
hope that such action would be tak
en, as p is thought it would lessen
the difficulties of the United States,
in extending protection to foreigners
in that rebellion-torn country.
Further evidence Is being gath
ered by the State Department today
in its sweeping inquiry Into the
Benton incident.

Washington, Feb. 26.—All the
influence at the command of the
State Deartment will be exercised
through diplomatic channels today
to secure the surrender of the body
of William S. Benton, which is held
by the Mexican Rebel General Vil
la. Secretary Bryan was surprised
today at the receipt of dispatches
quoting Villa as saying that Benton
was burled at Chihuahua and not
in Juarez. There has also been
persistent rumors that the body has
been burned.
Secretary Bryan conferred with
President Wilson, about noon, and
after the Conference, he said noth
ing now had developed.
Officials here today generally ad
mitted that the future policy of the
United States towards Mexico hing
ed on the outcome of the Benton
Incident. There was an official de
nial of the reports that Rear Ad
miral Fletcher had recommended
the landing of marines at Vera
Cruse.
At a conference today, between
Ambnssador 3pring-Rice and Secre
tary Bryan it was decided that Brit
ish Consul Perceval should not pro
ceed into Mexico to exhume Ben
ton’s body, "until better arrange
ments were made.
The contacting reports as to the
location of the body convinced the
officials that the British Consul
could not proceed until Its definite
location was made known.
It was said that England did not
look to the United States to recov
er Benton's body, as a legal point
of right, but It does expect this
