Atlanta, -March 10.—A boom to
make Uncle Jim Woodward gover
nor of Georgia has been started In
Atlanta, and Is taken -seriously
enough by many of the mayor's
friends.
Uncle Jim himself smiles wisely
and says nothing, when the subject
Is mentioned to him, but In all ser
iousness It would not be surprising
If he Is urged much further, to see
him make formal announcement of
his candidacy for the gubernatorial
chair.
His friends declare he would run
powerful race, and his enemies,
who have no peace as long as he Is
In Atlanta, declare they would glad
ly vote for him, in order to get him
out of city politics.
Whatever else Uncle'Jim has been
and has not been, he has proven a
stumbling block In the paths of the
peanut politicians of council, some
of whom have had only- the Idea
upparently of grabbing for their lm-
medlrl; ward Interests what they
could out of the city’s money bags,
and advancing their own petty am
bitions. Uncle Jim has been a stern
watch-dog of the city treasury, and
haB nearly got the city out of debt,
but he has done it at the expense of
making himself mighty unpopular
with the dominant faction in city
politics.
While Uncle Jim himself laughs
when the question Is put to him ser
iously, the 'Atlanta Journal today
says: “A good many of the mayor's
friends are not willing to let him Joke
them out of the notion. They say
the mayor’s policy of strict economy
and hvsiness-Iike methods would
apply with equal force to the han
dling of the state's affairs.”
