Mattie R. Tyler, a grand-daughter
of President John Tylor.. today sur
rendered her position as postmistress
at Courtland, which she had held
for the past sixteen years. B. A.
Williams succeeded her.
Miss Tyler turned over the offlee
only on receipt of a telegram from
Postmaster General Bugjeson, direct
ing her to do so. She had appealed
to Washington by- telegraph, be
cause she was unwilling to accept
Williams' credentials, which were
presented yesterday.

recent Civil Service examination.
When she appealed to President Wil
son, he told her that he could not

New York. While strolling around

he noted a car that was billed
through to New York. . An Idea
struck him that this was hfs chance
to get back to his former homo. He
therefore crawled Into the car, and
was later locked In. He starved
and thirsted for three days within
sight of the juicy fruit. He was
found when the car was opened near
here early today.
