fighting still continued at Tampico,
without advantage to either s de.
Because of the high wind, Rear

heavy fire of Federal gunboats In the

TROMAS COUNTY FARMERS
PREPARE FOR BOLL WEEVIL
Diversity of Crops This Year Larger
Than Ever Before-Cotton Acre
age About Large as Ever.
/A large portion of the cotton crop
ot Thomas County has been ; hinted
and the farmers have been doing
some rush work to get it In.
There is no doubt that the acre
age will be equally as large as that
of last year, but every effort will be
made to have the crop earlier in
order to get ahead of the coming of
the enemy, the boll weevil, which
Is scheduled for this section some
time during the summer or early
fall.
Of course there is always doubt
whether the weevil will really get
here or not. but even if he does.
Thomas County farmers have enough
of other crops to be sure of keeping
the wolf from the door. > Is proba
ble that there is a greater d’versity
of crops planted in this county now
than ever before, as it Is being
found more and more every year
that there is money In them.
Watermelon vines are growing off
well and all indications point to a
record crop for Thomas County.
