The following from the Birming
ham Age-Herald will be of Interest
in this city:
With the sale of the Atlanta, Bir
mingham and Atlantic Railroad next
week in Atlanta, and its formal
transfer to the new organization, it
is expected that plans in connection
with the operation of that lino will
be announced which will be of much
interest in Birmingham. There has
been considerable discussion here
during the past few days In regard to
the line affectin'; some new traffic
alliances, which will strengthen its
position in railroad circles and will
add very materially to the gross ton
nage handled.
It is stated that President Lamb
and a few other officials are expect
ed here during the latter part of the
week or the first of next week to
meet officials of the Frisco and the
Seaboard Air Line. There is said to
be pending negotiations whereby
traffic agreements advantageous to
both lines may be worked out and it
is not impossible that other lines
may be included.
"The Atlanta. Birmingham and
Atlantic and the Frisco, it is stated,
have at present a traffic agreement
by which the A.. B. & A. obtains con
siderable traffic. This, it is said,
will be greatly strengthened and
there will be affected other align
ments which will go to the better
ment of the A., B. & A.
There is considerable optimtism in
local railroad circles and Industrial
circles "eneraliy over the outlook
for the A.. B. Sr A. Tt Is stated that
the new financial arrantromoniB will
materially lessen the fixed charge
load carried by the line and that
there will be an easier method of
handling the indebtedness.

NEGRO LIVING IN DEWEY CITY

NOT TO ACCOMPANY HIS WIFE
TO SERVICES.
A negro named John Allen laat
night Jumped In a well to keep from
going to church. The negro lives In
Dewey City and his spouse was de-
slrlous of attending worship and
equally so of having John accom
pany her. This he did uot care to
do and purporting to evade this duty
he went Into the back yard and hop
ped down In the well.
He. however, didn’t stay In the
water but a minute, climbing thence
to the curb which was about six
Inches wide. He stayed theie for a
time until his wife had a chance to
got away and then he proved con
clusively that there was nothing
wron-. with his vocal chords. He now
admits that going to church wouldn’t
have been as bad as staying on the
well curb in wet clothes.
TIGER NEXT TO
POLICE BARRACKS
Atlanta, April 17.—The ll’.tic spar
row which builded its nest la the
mouth of a cannon had nothing on
J. H. Smith, of Decatur street, when
it comes to nerve.
Smith decided some time ago, so
the story runs, that he would add to
his legitimate stock of merchandise
by putting In a few barrels of good
blind tiger whiskey.
Casting about for s suitable and
convenient place to establish the
blind tiger, the brilliant Idea bit him
that he would avert suspicion by
opening up next door to the police
station.
And so he did. And plied a migh
ty profitable trade for a short time.
But yesterday some of the patrol
men, loafing ofT duty on the front
steps of the station house, saw Smith
drive up to his shop |n a buggy with
a large and suspicious looking sack
In his arms.
He made the mistake of glancing
furtively toward the police station,
as he went through the door with
the sack.
"Something doing," whispered one
patrolman to another, though wheth
