now attack Saltillo and then Tam
pico.
Zubaren estimates there are now
forty thousand Rebels in the field.
These reports overshadowed all
else In tho Mexican crisis today. It
Is thought that General Carranza
will combine tho forces of Generals
Villa, Zapata and OBrogon In at
tacking the capital city.
Rebels Mnrch on Mexican Towns.
Washington, May 7.—The van
guard of the Constitutionalists,
at Durapgo and Torreon, h.’s start
ed on a march toward Saltillo and
Zacatecas, according to a report re
ceived at the State Department this
morning from Consul Hamm, at Du
rango. It Is nlnnned to capture
both cities.

Veterans—Thousands of Visitors,

Jacksonville, Fla., May 1.—Busi
ness sessions were held today by the
United Confederate Veterans and
Sons of Veterans. The latter were
to elect officers today.
Seymour Stewart, of St. Louis,
•was later elected Commander-In-
Chief of the Sons of Confederate
Veterans, succeeding W. W. Old,
Jr., of Norfolk, Va.
Thousands of visitors thronged
the city’s streets today.
The Veterans meeting heard re
ports, and It was expectod they
would also elect officers beforo ad
journment tonight. Many believed
that General Bennett H. Young, of
Louisville, the present commander-
in-chief, would be re-elocted, if he
would accept the honor. Other
prominent Veterans mentioned In
this connection are General Felix
Robertson, of Texas, and General
K. M. VanZandt, commanding the
Tmns-Mlsslssippl Departments.

Vera Cruz, Mexjfco, May 7.—As

American Red Cross, Surgeon G.
Guiteras, the medical officer here,
has plans for improving the sani
tation of this city well under way.
So far, the army has not been
troubled by much sickness. There
have been a few cases of small-pox.
meningitis and typhoid fever, but
all these have been Isolated.
Quarantines havo been established
against several Mexican ports, on
account of yellow fever there. There
Is no fear of tho disease reaching
here.
The city’s genera? water supply
is good. That coming from the ter
minal works, and supply only a
small district, has been pronounced
bad, and has been condemned.
A campaign against flies is to be
made, in order to protect the army
from typhoid fever.
Committees, representing the bet
ter element of the population, con
tinue co-operating with the United
State in the restoration of normal
conditions, and many merchants
have restored prices prevailing be
fore the American occupation. The
newspapers cost one cent, and in
some cases a little more. The street
cars charge slightly increased fares.
This money Is being utilized In feed
Ing and caring for the indigent poor
of the city. More American money
Is being put into circulation daily.

Pelham, May 6.—Will Spence,
prominent farmer living m the edge
of Grady county, about 5 miles west
of Pelham, had a narrow escape late
3unday afternoon, when Mack Mc
Coy, a former half-cropper, pulled
a pistol and fired on him.
McCoy went to the homo of
Spence, it Is said, and asked him to
get in his buggy with him and ride
to a church near by. Spence did so
and when they reached the church,
and Spence got out of tho buggy,
McCoy drew his gun and fired the
shot, narrowly missing Spence. He
was preventeu xrom flrln? again by
bystanders.
A warrant was sworn out for Mc
Coy, and the oracers are now search
ing for him.
