Merrillville, May 2 S.—This com
munity was -blessed Tuesday after
noon with a fine shower of rain. It
■was badly needed by the growing
crops, and therefore was appreciated
by all. . ,
Picnics are all the go these days.
Several of our people attended the
picnic at New Shiloh last Friday,
and all report having a most en
joyable time. Among those goin^
from here were Misses Mattie Mars-
ton, Jonnie Lee Evans, Vetitia
Dyke, Mrs. J. J. Turner, and Mes
srs. J. R. Dyke, Giles, Oree Wilson,
Ernest McMillan, Andrew Dyke, and
others.
The W. 0. W. picnic will be held
at this place Saturday. May 30th.
The public is invited to attend. How
ever, we would suggest that all
bring well-filled baskets.
Miss Mattie Mansion is the guest
of h©r sister, Mrs. Helen Quarter-
man, in Thomasville. this week.

Well, we have had a good rain and
It has helped the feeling of the peo
ple, besides being of much beneflt
to the growing crops. The farmers
are now setting put potatoes, and
will soon begin to cut oats. Some
have already begun cutting. The
oat crop is very short In this sec
tion, but other crops are looking
fine. The truckers report the bean
crop a failure, and the cucumbers
have.also been damaged to some ex
tend by the dry weather.

Meigs have called a mass meeting
for Saturday next. May 30th, at 3
p. m., and it Is desired that all the
voters who possibly can, will turn
out nnd express themselves on this
Important matter. Of course we all
know before hand, whom Meigs will
concentrate its efforts on, and no
better offer could be made to the
voters of Thomas County, as his
election would mean a square deal
to all Interests concerned. Mr.
Bowers has not yet signified his In
tentions as to his entering the race,
but when he sees that practically all

dren will picnic at Miller's Springs,
on the banks of the Ochlocknee, Fri
day, the 26th, and a pleasant time
for each, we hope. Maybe some of
the boys will want to learn how to
swim while there, and we offer the
advice, don’t go near the water!
