DENIAL TO WOULD-BE SENA
TORS’ ATTACK.
Atlanta, June 30.—Branding the
charges that there were any strings
tied to his appointment of W. S
West as United States Senator,
Governor John M. Slaton has ad
dressed a letter to the editor of the
Brunswick News which should effec*
tually answer the attacks made on
the Governor by Thomas W. Hard-
rick, one of his opponent! In the
Senatorial race. ,
In an address at Brunswick, Mr.
Hardwick related a startling story to
the effect that Colonel West had told
Governor Slaton that If he were
given the appointment he would not
make the race for election, but If
he were not given the place he
would spend 375,000 to defeat the
Governor.
Governor Slaton says:
"The above story Is absolutely
untrue. Mr. West sent me no such
message nor was such a suggestion
made by him or any of his friends.
He was appointed without a re
striction of any kind. Until 3
o’clock of the evening Dofore I
made the appointment I did not
know what he was going to do,
and when he telephoned me that
he had decided not to make the
race I asked him not to do so be
cause of me and told him I had
not decided whether I would run
even If he did not.”
