New York, July 29.—Anticipating
the opening of the Panama canal,
fifty vessels so far have applied to
the surveyor lot the port here for

Thirty have been granted certificates

It will cost large steamships like

thousand dollars, and for an aux

MESSES EMEUS
Atlanta, Ga., July 30.—Senator
Hoke Smith today addressed
open letter to the farmers of Geor
gia, expressing his regret that he
was not able to visit and talk with
them face to face, &b in his former
campaigns, and telling them the rea
son—because there are many meas
ures pending which so much affect
the interests of Georgia farmers
that he cannot take the time for a
personal canvass of the State.
The Senator mentions among
these the trust legislation, and one
bill particularly which seeks to
free farm organizations from the
operation of the Sherman anti-trust
law, and which will permit them to
hold their cotton or otherwise work
together to obtain better prices for
products.
The cotton futures bill, designed
to protect the planter against the
methodb of the great exchanges, is
also dwelt upon.
