Nearly every man, woman and

It looks as if the euretallment of
next year’s cotton crop is the most
important matter to be considered
now. The state and the government
could get together, put a stop to a
sixteen million bale crop, but it
would be better for the States to
do it, and gain the revenue from
the tax.
THE RANK STATEMENTS.
In this issue of the semi-weekly
Times Enterprise, appears the
statements of six of the banks or
t ie county. These statements prove
beyond any doubt the solidity of
these institutions and the fair and
business-like management of them.
It similarly proves the substantial
condition of the county, and argues
for Its people. We are very glad
to be able to present such a splen
did array of reports of our finan
cial institutions and assure the peo
ple that the money which they place
in these institutions Is well protect
ed by a liberal and, at the same
lime, conservatively sane policy ofj
operation. I
T lomasville is to be congratulated
upon its evidence of growth and
progress as shown in the annual tax
returns. The property of white
residents Is nearly four hundred
thousand dollars In excess of that of
last year. The colored property
will be in about the same propor
tion. For the first time, Thcmas-
ville’s returns are over four mil
lion dollars.
The City Council, with the au
thority to assess taxes, has been
materially assisted in the work by
the books of the county, which they
used for reference and which are
complete and accurate enough to be
valuable even in city work. This
Is directly the result of the recently
enacted state tax law, and Is one of
the many beneficial results which
that law will attain.
The course of true love never runs
smooth, so they say, but it is run
ning most all the time.
