The Tlnies-Enterprlse a short time

GREAT BATTLES COMPARED.
The great battle of the Alsne, now
raging In France, has endured 16
days. Only one or two battles In
history have lasted so long, and in
none have so many men been en
gaged, says a writer In the New York
Herald.
The first battle of the Marne In
this war lasted from September 7 to
September 12, last. A loss of more
than 100,000 men has been report
ed.
The battle of Mukden, from Feb
ruary 18 to March 10, 1905, (20
days), cost the Russians and Japa
nese approximately 200,000 men.
At Leipzig, October 16-18, 1883,
102,000 men were lost: 50,000
French and 52,000 of the Allies.
The battle at Gettysburg, 1863,
lasted only three days, but out of
165,000 men engaged on both sides,
there were more than 44,050 killed,
wounded and missing.
The three great battle of Plevna,
between the Russians and Turks oc
curred between July 20 and Septem
ber 12, 1877; meantime the fighting
was Incessant. Thirty thousand lives
were lost.
At Liaoyang the Russians and
Japanese fought from August 26 to
September 4, 1904; 39,209 men were
killed.
IA French statistician estimates
that In the wars of the last 100 years
14,000,000 men have been killed or

Atlanta, Oct. 10.—The United
