Ships Taking Great Part.
It Is clear now that the British
ships have been playing an Impor
tant part In the warfare along the

nounces that the monitors Servln,
Humbers and Mercy, not only bom
barded the German positions south
of Ostend, hut landed marines with
machine guns.
So far, the monitors have been
able to dodge tho submarine attacks,
though, as reported Tuesday, at
least twelve torpedoes were dis
charge at them without striking.
Exactly how the (Jerman submarines
got to Ostend Is unknown.
Fighting Jusl 70-Miles From
British Coast.
With the fighting along the Bel
gian coast hardly more than seventy
miles from Dover, that scene neces
sarily holds the chief Interest with
the British public, though, according
to last night’s Paris official com
munlcatlon, there were violent ac
tions along the 70-mlle battle front,
extended almost due north and
south from NIeuport to Lebnsse.
