Lodz is in our possession, and the
Russian losses arc very large.

London, Dec. 7—A careful com- who are stationed to the
parison of the Berlin and petrograd
reports, leads to the conclusion that
the German forces again occupy the
City of Lodz, from whence they
were driven on their first retreat
from Warsaw.
Berlin announces positively that
the Germans have taken Lodz, while
Pfftrograd admits the situation there
has become “desperate.”
The semi-official statement from
Petrograd declares that the Rus
sians are strong enough to hold th*. j
invaders in Northern Poland and
will content themselves with doing
this, while devoting their main en
ergy to the Cracow reductions, and
a determined invasion of Hungary.
Hungary Becomes Frightened.
Hungary, the Peirograd reports
say, is the one weak point in the
'Teutonic Allies armor. The Petro
grad messages say that, even as early
as the time when Lemberg, Galicia,
fell, Austria asked Russia for peace
terms, but the negotiations looking
to this end—if any really occurred—
proved futile.
The story was again revived in
Petrograd in the form of a report
that the Hungarian Prime Minister,
while on a recent visit to the Kaiser,
demanded better military protection
for Hungary, a lack of which would
surely cause the loss of that king- \
dom, the prime minister is reported
to have declared.
Ostond is Burning.
The latest French official communi
cation declares that there is nothing
new to report on the Western front,
and. with the possible exception of
a special dispatch, stating that the
City of Ostend (the Belgian seaport
city) is burning, nothing has been
received in London to dispute the
accuracy of that statement.
Austrians Held in Check.
The latest reports from Montene
gro and Servia indicate that those
Balkan Allies, who are practically
at bay on their mountain strong
holds, are holdinj the Austrian in
vaders in check.
Some minor activity has been not
ed on the water, resulting i*i the
reported destruction of several Turk
ish auxiliaries in thu Black Sea, by
the Russian submarines, and the
crippling by mines, of the famous
cruiser Hamidleh. which is said to
have regained the port of Constan
tinople with the greatest difficulty.
All Eyes on the Balkans.
Diplomatic interest is centered on
Rome, where Ex-Premier GiolitU’s
statement, to the effect that Austria
planned a war against Servia in
1913, caused something of a sen
sation.
