Hardwick has merely Insisted that the

If anything better than an income tax
could be suggested that he would
yield. Now here comes Cliff Walker
and announces that he favors increas
ing the school appropriations by giv
ing free school books and that he will

(hat is popular, and further, that he
wlH reduce taxes—particularly by re
pealing the tax equalisation law. In
short. Cliff will not risk his populari
ty by holding down appropriations
and holding up the present taxes—so
tbe state will get In an even worse
mess. The result will be that an In
come tax will be favored even by those
who would have It to pay. I don't see
how Mr. Walker could possibly be a
good governor with hla platform. But
We don’t know what is going to hap

Hardwick is going to have the support
of many men, who have disagreed with
him in the past, eapeclhlly on his wai
record. Many of them now regard
that as a fight that resulted mor<
from hot headedness and miajudgment
than from any inherent or natural de
sire to pervert the will of the people
or curtail Its wartime preparations to
the comfort of tbe enemy.
Yet you hear, every now and then,
of some man who has never been
aligned with Governor Hardwick,
stating openly that be will desert hts
former standards for the Governor, by
reason of the fact that he haa attempt
ed to make good and has energetically

ent for this point to say that it ought
to be run by business men and with
out any political phlegmaiiclsm.
No candidates have so far offered
for this place. It is stated that Mr. J.
A. Chastain, the Incumbent, will not
offer for re-election. A good, sound,
level headed business man can per
form a worthy service, if be will offer.
The office seems to he going begging.
What are we going to do about it?
There is no use waiting until some
thing happens before getting a man
to accept the office. If nobody wants
It, nobody has much right to criticise
those who may get It by default, or
even If they- do not pertorm their du
ties as a majority of the people of
tbe county might elect. There is
certain amount of Individual respond-
bllify' Involved, and this is Irrespective
or regardless of any public or local
sentiment. The man elected must
perform certain business functions as
be thinks best and, therefore, It is im
perative to have men that are not
actuated by unwpfclhy motives, or who
are not biased by political demands.
We have been fortunate, In many re
spects, in this offfife. Good men, sound,
true and tried, have given their time
to this work. They can't be expected
to continue tbe irksome job for all
time. It Is ready for new blood, and
It ought fo be ready to take up the
task.

WHAT WILL BE THE RESULT?
Those who argue that the govern
ment of the United States will take a
hand to guarantee the right to men to
work when and where they please,
find very little consolation In the re
cent assassinations at Herrin. 111.,
where twenty-five or more non-union
workers. Innocent of any crime except
taking men’s jobs, who hud laid down
their tools and were on strike, wore
ruthlessly slain and no sign of repent,
ence or punishment Is forthcoming. .
If the government is going to see
that tbe railroads are operated It must
realize that it will have to tuce oppo
sition. Union men are going to fight
for their jobs and fight anybody that
intends to take it away from them.
This will mean a clash with the gov
ernment. Under the circumstances It
would seem quite probable that it will
not materialize and that the strike will
go ou without any Interference by the
government.
The question will not be one ot pro
tecting railroads or mines from depre
dations. It will Involve tbe right of
the American people to sustain them
selves by the sweat of their brows. Id
such a contingency there is likely to
be trouble and, therefore, It Is mors
than desirable that the end of the
strike be brought forth as soon as
practlcatrie. Signs of s settlement
are said to be Imminent. If this la the
truth the whole country will heave a
sigh of relief. Otherwise we are
for some very trying times.
