hearing of two hours and a half, fea
tured by the sensational testimony of
Mre. Augusta Tlerman, who charged
Harry Poulin, local clothing man,
with the paternity of her ton-months
old child, Judge Chester Ducomb ad
journed the case at S oclock, until 10
a. m. today, when the hearing was to
be resumed. Mre. Tlerman is the wife
of John P. TIernan, Notre Dame law
professor.
Mrs. TIernan, plaintiff In the case
and star witness for the stato was jn

ment and was undergoing a rigid
cross examination by Samuel Parker,
chief counsel for Poulin.
A crowd which Jammed the council
chambers of tho city hall was on hand
long before the hearing began, while
the corridors outside wore so packed
that it was necessary to call a police
squad to presorro order.. Evou the
streets tn front of the city hall were
crowded with people and several wo
men fainted In thn rash to get seats.
Mrs. TIernan, pretty 27-yoar ol.
wife of the law professor, was

hie battery of legal talont, while Tier-
nan sat with Mrs. TIernan and Prose
cutor Floyd Jclllson on tho opposlto
side of the tablo. Poulin assumed
nonchalant bearing which he main
talned throughout the hearing.
After the first witness, Mrs. Vera
Flnkelblnder, a nurse who bad attend
ed .Mrs. TIernan when she gave hlith
to the child, had been questioned by
Prosecutor Jelllson and the defense
had waived examination, Mrs. TIer
nan was called to the stand.
After answering tho preliminary
questions. In a tone scarcely audible
and with her eyes cast down, Mrs.
TIernan In reply to Jettison's ques
tions described In detail the entire
course of her alleged Illicit romance
with Poulin. Sbo told of accompany
lag Poulin on tho night of Feb. 12th
to a place near here. These trips, ac
cording to the witness, were ropeated
twice weekly for almost three months,
Mrs. TIernan said that when she
learned she was to become a motbor
sbo made this tact known to Poulin
who, she said, at the time admitted
the paternity and promised to aid her
in overy way. Even after this, Mrn
TIernan declarod, tho clandestine
meetings continued until ubj.‘> *.
months before the child w»j hern.
After Jelllson had completed
questioning, Samuel Parke.- began hie
cross-examination of the witness. Pie
defense counsel questioned Mrs. Tier-
nan closely as to her domestic life
with Professor TIernan and will re
