NEWBERRY GIVES
GHOST.
Senator Truman H. Newberry, of
Michigan has resigned rather than
face the music that was portended as
a result of the recent elections. Mr
Newberry made a statement declar
ing that his usefulness would be ham-
pered by partisan attacks and vilifi
cations.
It would seem that he has rightly
judged the sentiment expressed In
the elections held this month in
which eight of the eleven Senators fa
vorable to him were rerused their
seats again, the charge of Newberry-
ism being most prominent In those
campaigns and Influencing a number
of voters.
There were prospects for a further
effort to oust him from the Senate
and those on the Inside predicted that
It would be successful. Rather thau
face the music he has relieved the
Senate of the matter and probably
greatly relieved his friends of threat
ened embarrassment. The country
cannot but applaud his choice altho
there are many who had rather had
him summarily refused a seat on the
ground of too great an expenditure of
money.
Newberry defeated Ford for the
Senate In Michigan and spent a great
amount of money. He was accused

The happiest men are those, who
bave worked hard and have the result
of their toll In some tangible form.
We do not mean to say that men, who
spend their money for the pleasure o!
others, as well as tbelr profit, are
without pleasure or bereft of any joy.
Far from that. But we do say, that
those who save In time of excess will
have something which they can most
acceptably use and it will be the
means of creating happiness In per
mltting them to do things that would
not otherwise be possible, both for
themselves and the other fellow.

WHY NO ACTION?
A prominent business man of Thom-
asvllle, interested primarily In the de
velopment of American manhood and
protecting It from various and sundry
devitalising and dangerous elements
of business and social life, has called
our attention very forcibly to an ar
ticle which appeared In the papers of
the country relative to the self-rising
flours that are commonly used. If the
statements contained In that article
aro true this country should by all
means know It, and knowing, proceed
to Immediate action. If not, the state
ments are worthy of severe condemna
tion.

voted the confidence of the Senate
by a very narrow margin and given
his seat. Newberry was elected to
defeat the League of Nations and his
election only saved the Republican
party from the necessity of having to
allow its ratification. He paid a
dear price for the sake of his party

present the scientific side of a matter
that must prove very vital to the South
especially:
"The South consumes from 8,000,000
to 10,000,000 barrels of self-rising flour
annually, says Alfred W. McCann, na
tionally known pure food expert and
Investigator for the New York Globe
and Commercial Advertiser, and most
of this, be says. Is 'woefully deficient
in protein, containing a pellagra-pro
ducing surfeit of starch and a vitamin
destroying excess of chemicals used
for leavening purposes.’
Mr. McCann believes this condition
Is undermining the health of our
Southern people, and in the following
article be sets forth part of his con
clusions:
“Most people think they are familiar
with wheat,
will tell you. 'That settles that and
no more Is to bo said. The United
States government standards divide
wheat Into six Classes and approxi
mately sixty grades.
“About the only wheat In America

than they have ever been: we find
that there Is no public control as a
public health measure from the view
point of human nutrition of these ar
tificial breadstuffs woefully deficient

ducing surfeit of starch and a vitamin-
destroying excess of chemicals used
for leavening purposes.
"What are the government's warn
ings for? Obviously not to be acted
upon. Still more obviously not to be
put into the text books on biology.
Certainly not to bo taught to the chil
dren In the schools. Still more cer
tainly not to be used as guides by the
mothers of the race In selecting foods
that will give to their growing off
springs the maximum of adequate nu
trition. What, then, are they for? To
be filed away and forgotten? Why all
the education and the millions appro
priated for more?
“It the manufacturers of self-rising
flours desire to thank us for this pub
lic exposure of the truth they may do
so by forgetting for a while their love
of profit at the expense of the human
family, label themselves as parasites,
voluntarily form a leper colony and
move In."
