or whether to a determination on the
pin of the average farmer to econo
mise. lets reasonable to presume
that both of these causes bad some
thing to do with the reduction of the
consumption of fertilizers.
It is equally hard to say what is
the cause of the evident increase in
the demand for fertilizers this year. 1
do not pretend to tell the cause, but
only know-that the demand baa v ry
considerably increased and the fear
has even been expressed by some ol
the manufacturers ot fertilizers that
they wih hardly be able to supply *a
sufficient product from their factories
to meet the demand.”
The Constitution's information is
probably correct. There is a tenden
cy toward an increase of the use o:
tcmlizcrs among the farmers. It they
would increase the amount of home
made fertilizers it wou>d be all righ>;
but the extensive purchase ot com
mercial fertilizers, on a cred-t, will so
riuusiy hamper the farmer when pay
day comes. Our advice is to go slow
in the pure asc of commercial tertiu
zers. S ick, so tar as possible, to the
home product.
Safety in Traveling
lo the annual report o the Railway
CotnaussioJer- ot New York Sia«e ap
pears the following suggestive para*
grapn:
Alter nearly ten years of investiga
tiou into all accidents occumng on
the railroads in t.tis state, one Let is
pressed upon the attention of the
board, lu collisions, in overurnit g
of cars by broken rails, or by what
ever cause, ms foilua, without v*r a
tiun, that the drawing-room a- d sleep
ing cars sustain far Its* damage th«n
the ordinary day coach. This immu
nity is directly the result oi difference
ol construction for safety, and there
shuuid be an improvement in this re
spect. The passenger id a coach i»
entitled to the same safety, if not the
n luxury, as the one who occup ee

New York Ice-Bound.
New York. Jan. n.—All of the
harbor ot New York was ice-bound t»
day. The gateway of the contiuent
was almost impassably closed to both
ocean ships and nver ferry boats. The
ice had formed to an extent not known
for the last 15 years. Traffic was at a
standstill, and the bay was studded
wuh crafts of every description, frozen
in and motionless.
A very few of the Lrry boats to and
from the city and tbe island cities or
Jersey managed, alter hours of back-
lug and tugging at the ice floes, to get
through for a single trip each; and
even the best of the ice-breaking pas
senger boats encountered great ai d
almost insurmountable obstacles lhe
Sound steamers were also greatly de
layed and had a hard time getting
down. They were covered with ice
- Ocean tramp steamers, and others
o! almost all classes, were nipped in
the ice and held prisoner*. On the
w^ole, it was such an Arctic scene on
every hand as nad not been witnessed
in New York harbor for years.
