CHURCH DECADENCE.
and other states have brought out facts !
tliat are not encouraging. The increase f
of members in the Presbyterian church
in the last twelve months has been less
than in the year preceding, and all told
amounts to almost exactly one new
member to every thousand old ones—a
pretty poor dividend. ’
Bishop Lawrence has recently called 1
attention to the.aLowness of growth of
the Episcopal church, and though we
have not the statistics at hand, the ex
perience of the Baptists and Methodists
has been in no way different.
It is a well known tact that candidates
for the ministry have been but meager
in proportion to the needs during the
last few years. The Students’ Volunteer
Movement , for Foreign Missions is the
only religions organization wo know of
that has more applicant® for territory
tlian the organization can handle. • ‘ •
Now but lately a leading publisher of ’
religious literature says that there is a
sag in religious reading of every kind
and when asked his idea of a remedy
replied that he saw but little hope tor a
revival of religion until a commercial
overturning should bring men face to
face with eternal realities, and make
them turn for consol^tii n : to eternal
subjects.
This publisher takes a gloomy view of
the matter, but in the main he is on the
right track. In this unusual commer
cial prosperity the populace of this coun
try have come to feel theme dve too
independent; to be too inclined to
attribute their earthly prosperity to
their own shrewdness, and to think
that this shrewdness will stand them in
the same stead in the world to come.
There is no question that the princi
ples of Christianity are becomingflfort'
widespread and more generally observed.
It is fashionable to be honest these days.
A man is not admitted to the privileges
of society and money making unless he
is honest, and to a certain extent moral.
But too many of them are Nicodemuses,
having the form without the spirit.
As a matter of fact, church member
ship seems to be increasing in almost in
verse proportion to the growth of mor
ality.
This proportion, however, appears tc
