The Valdosta Times of Saturday, June c
37,- publishes the following account of ]
happenings to J. M. Reynolds, who is i
well known in this city: i
“Dr. J. M. Reynolds, an ex-Confed- t
orate soldier who mikes his living ped- e
dling medicine through the country, lias t
been lying at the home of J. H. Hall, at
106 Brown street, in a dangerous oondi- I
tion, as the result of a merciless beating t
which he says was inflicted upon him ]
over a week ago at Alapaha. - ' (
■‘Yesterday morning he was placed , on \
mSEm}. and sent to his former home Ce>> |
* milla, it being his desire to be removed 1
to that where he is said to liave relatives <
. and friends. . ’
“It is understood that he is a Mason
and also that the local masons have been i
looking after his wants during his con
finement from the wounds which weTe j
inflicted upon him. <
, “Dr. Reynolds hardly knew how he 1
came to be so badly beaten. He stated
once that he went in a room at Alapaha
where some men were congregated, }
They had some whiskey with them and
when he entered he was taken fora
revenue officer and pounced upon. He
was beaten over the head with a club i
and then stamped to the ground under
the feet of the assailant. Being a rather
old and feeble man he was unable to de
fend himself from hid assailant.
“It was also claimed by friends of Dr. :
Reynolds that, after he was beaten, he
was placed upon the train and sent to
. Waycross, but he did not stop there.
preferring to come on to Valdosta where
^ he had some friends. .
j “Another report says that Dr. Rey-
[ nold’s wounds were inflicted by some
[ man who claimed to be the marshal of
I Ajapoha. *It was said that the man was
drinking, as was also Dr. Reynolds.
' They had. a misunderstanding and the
I alleged marshal beat him with a club
and then stamped him. under his feet.
While bleeding and nearly dead from
his wounds, Dr. Reynolds was told to
i leave the town at onoe or he would be
| lynched.
“He came here and has been in very
' bad shape ever since. For three or four
days there lias been little chance for his
» recovery, and yesterday, morning it ^raa
i stated that blood poison had set in and
S, that the old man could <,live but a short
\ while.”
