’ At last, a practical solution of the
problem seems to have been reached.
There has been set up 09 Edwin Caws-
ton’s ostrich farm at Pasadena, Cal.,
a contrivance which performs its work
regularly and with certainty. From
one hour and a half after sunrise to
half an hour before sunset It drives a
tan hone power engine, raising 1,400
gallons of water twelve feet per min
ute. This is enough to Irrigate about
COO acres of deciduous trees or 800
acres planted with orange trees.
The solar motor is In' shape like a
■ectton of a huge umbrella of very
substantial construction, having a dl-
ameter of thirty-three feet nt Its wid
est part and of fifteen feet at Its
narrowest The whole Inside surface is
covered with mirrors, each 2 feet long
by 3% Inches wide. Nearly 2,000 of
these long, inarrow mirrors catch the
sun’s rays and reflect their beat upon
a sHm boiler just where the handle of
the umbrella would bel . <
The boiler is thirteen and a half feet
long and holds 100 gallons of water.
When the concentrated heat from the
mirrors is focused on It tt . soon be
comes so hot that a stick held against
it smokes and bursts Into flame. In
about an hour steam Is generated and
is conveyed from the head of the boil

cylinder of the steam engine, being
thereafter used in the ordinary man-

The list shows that there are 1,601
children between the ages of 6 and 18 in
Thomasville.
What is CASTORIA
This is an$ncrea8e of 800
or 25 per cent over the number in 1898,
the last previous census having been
taken at that time. There were then
1,200 children pf school age in the city'.
This is a most gratifying showing.
The town has been steadily increasing
in size and the count proves this. It is
an accepted fact that there is an ^average
of one child of school age to every five
inhabitants. This would give Thomas-
ville a population of 7,600. It is an un
doubted fact that Thomasville has many
more inhabitants tlian£the 5,822 allotted
to her by the census of 1900.
The figures are as follows: White,
males 283: females 272;;*jcolored, males
456; females 491. total 1,601. Of this
entire number there is only one white
imbecile, and two colored ones.
The 'figures for 1898, are
males 227; females 191; colore
834; females 455. Total 1,217.
A comparison of these figures shows a
decided increase in population during
the lase five years and the school facili
ties have more than kept pace with the
growth.

Therefore, when your kidneys are weak
