A State Prison Scene.
On Day ihe Governor of New
ilamps-hire visited the State prison at
Concord, and after vie wing the build*
ing, requested the warden to br ng a
certain prisoner into thfc room. In
a short time Mr. Mayo and tho man
entered and took their positi. n in the
middle of the company. The convict
was, of course, astonished to find him
self ushered into so large agarh. ting,
in which were some twenty ladies, iu
eluding the wife of his Excelbucy.—
Tin (jovernor rose, took tho trim by the
hand, and spoke substantially as fol
lows :
“My friend, about twelve months
ago jou were committed to this prison
lor five years for allege 1 criuro ol
passing counterfeit money. Soon af
ter your incarceration, cireuuisUrnce#
came to light tending to prove” that,
although a counterfeit bill pa-sed
through yonr hands, it was U'l'il by
you in an entirely it oooi-iH manner,
arid that you were unwit'ingly the
dupe ot a boo l ndrcl, who fled the State
and has never been at rested.
“I immediate'y ordered a full i'tves>
tigation of your case, and 1 am
thoroughly convjttced tliat you ate an
innocent nr in. re vmg out an unjust
sentence. The Cun-tituiiou of the
(State gives me the power to open tin
doors of this prison ; and in the law
ful exercise of that power 1 now grant
you a full and free pardon. This very
hour the warden will relieve you of a
convict’s uniform and give you a citi
zen’s dress. You have been u good
man within these walls, and v lulu 1
and Inv friends here live we will every
wh re hear testimony that your iu
rrisonment leaves no stain up tt your
ch racter. A dear wife and loving
sister have prayed for yonr release,
an i I now restore you T < their ban s,
to be once more their comfort and sup
port.’''
As the Governor closed his remarks,
the poof- nan, overjoyed With liapj i
ness, trembled in every limb, and Ins
face was wet with tears. Not ap<r- >n
in (he audience looked unmoved upon
the scene All present congratulated
the prisoner u|»p'i hi* just n lease, and
wished hi lit a happy and prosperous
future. •
The Prinrru of U'nles, —Burleigh
wr tes to the Boston Journal, from
London, as follows:
‘•All London is stirred to its lowest
depths by the sickness of the I’rimvss
of Wales. Hite i« very siek—much
more so than the press is allowed to
state. There is great superstition
about the Princess of Wales. Kng<
land has not had one since the death
of Princess Churl die, uln-e early
death tly?- nation so deeply mourned
It is the faith of the nation th*.t it is
a fatal position, and many have pre
dicted that Alexandra would not hold
tho position long. And now it is fear*
ed that her sickness is unto death.
