There is, however, quite a demand for eharp knives and soft pine. »®rßy order of Gen. Pope the sell ing of spirituous liquors was forbidden here on the 4th instant. crops in this and the sur. rounding country bid fair to produce a heavy yield. So far oar people have just cause to feel thankful. JJgg“Our fellow townsman, Mr. G. A, Jeffers, the Artist, calls the atten tion of our ottileus to the fact that Mr. Starbuck will leave him in a few days. If therefore you want a good picture, don’t fail to go at once and get one. See advertisement. work of repairing the track of the Atlantic & Gulf Hailroad, be tween this place and Bainbridge is being rapidly pu-hed forward. A few days more and the iron will be laid as far as the Ocklockonee river, to aid in the transportation of lumber for the purpose of strengthening the trestle and bridge. If the article is worthy of pub lication, the writer need not be asham ed to own it, at least to the publisher. “First it Blew, then it Snew, TUEN IT TnEVV, AND THEN IT FRIZ.” For further particulars as to the truth of the above quotation, enquire at the Soda Founts of either Stark, Glower, or the ice house of Mr. Wragg. Town Improvements. —The exten sion of the Atlantic & Gulf Railroad, seems to beget au inspiriting effect upon our people. Sensible that they must act, or go backwards, they are striking heavier and bolder blows New buildings and other useful ini- \ proVemonta are daily springing up all around us. We have not time to take a stroll and make a note of the many enterprises going forward. The Fourth of July. —This gre it American day broke upon us with a cloudless sky, and was somewhat enli vened by the explosion of gunpowder, together \.ith the soul-stirring strains of drum and fife. The Stars and Stripes floated from the roof of the Court House, having been placed there by order of Capt. W. F. White, the Agent of the Freedmen’s Bureau. We tru.-t iti ninety-second anniversary may be ushered in by a regular old-fashioned Southern celebration. .Colored Parade.—Our colored friends with the drum and fife pouring forth its patriotic strfir.s, mnde a par ade on the lourth instant in our streets. Men and women seemed to be alike imprefcted with the “momectfens im pertarreo of the ocoitsipn," a« we no ticed there were many females in the ranks. McC. Duvis was the colon-’ orator of the day. A dinner was also served up near the colored Baptist Church, j '“’Ob, my country, how art tliou la! 100 from thy high estate 1” Beware, Bovs. —Many of our lit tle boys are in the habit of bathing in the old brick yard hole*, near the tan yard, little knowing that they run the i risk of slipping into an old well and getting drowned. Wo know of sev. I oral, and there may be more, contain. j ing from twenty to twenty five feet of water. They arc so situated as to ' deceive you. A little son of Mr. Hurst was nearly drowned in one of them a few weeks since. Don’t bathe in the ) water at all—it is unhealthy. #@“That delicious, Watermelon j which the Kditor requested some body to bring him a tew weeks since, iuu arrived / Mr. Robert E Dixon, residing a few mile* from town, on the Tallahassee road, made us a present of a very nice one a few days since. He j will please accept our thanks, and al low us to assure him, that «e«, (he printers, disposed of the same in regu lar .watermelon stylo. We trust the donor may always find the soil faithful ; to bis demands. Dog Fennel. —We have read some where, in a medical work, that the leaves and flower of this rank-smelling weed yields a large proportion of oil. We aio not poatea as to the method of estracting it, but we do know that Itfgs quantities of it may be found growing almost in the very heart of oar town. It is an unhealthy weed, and should be cut down and cast out. Fantakticlk*.—This unique, gro tesque, ill-sbapcn, scare all the-cbil dren, troop of amateur soldiers, under the immediate command of Captam SnoUagoiter-over the-fenrr, made their appearance on born and mule back, in our street* on Wednesday eve ning last. The ranks were liim, ow iog we suppose to tbs cloudy state of the weather, and the small amount of whiskey on hand. After halting in froot of the gallery of Mr G. A. Jef fers, and having their beautiful profiles lakes, they struck a trot, and disap peared round the corner. If yon most use medicine*, n%e Professor Kaytons remedies. For sale at I>r. P. 8.
