On the contrary, there are a few who have as pired to Congressional and other honors, but have invariably been re j acted. This, with the very general disfranchisement of our best men, was to be expected. The dominant now or did not want character or talents They wanted creatures trained in the Loyal Leagues, those sinks of | oh icul corruption, to execute tho will id the National !•! ' •' Executive Commih tec at Washington City, and not men of independence or diameter The Convention is almost, as p >or in till mt. as it is in character. Miller, of Fulton, Akcrmun, of Libert, Sall'oM, of Morgan, and Mekay, of Sumter, are their able men. The lirst. we all know —the two latter arc lawyers of North ern birth, of fair ability and go I pris vate character. We look wi ll anxie ty to the action of these gentlemen.— We will see win tlior they will adopt a noble and statesmanlike policy, or whether they will fall in under the Maynns Appullo of the Convention, the Boston negro, Aaron A. Bradley. Wo refer of course, to the delegates elected by the Radical organization.— The others are ‘like angels visits, few and far between,’ and if they take their neats will be said spectators of the dis gusting scene. —Atlanta Intel, Tho Sum of it All. Glut I do not despair of tho repub lic. Ido not believe there is strength enough at Washington, nor in iho whole South lo wrick these loyal States. The buffaloes of the prairie might as well rebel against the Rocky Mountains as South Carolina against New England. These loyal States have got tho brains of tlie continent, and in the long run, to the honor ot human nature bo it said, brail s gov cm. We shall govern. I believe in the god like supremacy of brains : I believe also in the divine right of hearts; 1 1m lieve N rthem eiviliza. tion covers heart and brain, and the j South lacks both. TiIOMASVILLE, GA.: TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 1807. N. 11. St a hbuck is our authorized Agent for the City of Savannah, to receive and receipt for advertising and subscriptions to the Southern Enterprise. THE MEETING ON .SAT URDAY. The meeting on Saturday to resist the tax levied by the Inferior Court for Railroad purpsses, was attended, ns near as we could judge, principally by persons residing in the 17th Dis tr.ct and on the Lunh border of the County. They had seemingly been well drilled before they came to the meeting and their purpose fixed to re sist tho tax without regard to proprie ty or reason. The leaders deserve credit for the completeness ol the or ganization they conjured up, but we are satisfied that they donot compose a third of the voteis of the county. — CTI. S. B. Spencer and Hon. James L. Seward in do powerful arguments in Denali* or me liailrrad and elo quently appealed to tho intelligence, patriotism and enterprise ot the mal contents, but they had expected and were pro; sired for this, and determined to hear no voice of reason. A com promise offered by Cel, Seward was tumultuously voted down and great noise and confusion att.est-.-d the satis faction they enjoyed at finding them selves largely in tho majority of those in the- bouse They finally passed resolutions which were oidered to bo published and to which we must refer those who desire to know the action taken. A subsciiplien was commenced to raise money to fee a lawyer for the purpose of testing the question before the Courts, atxl a lew were very san guine of success, although avvaie that several similar suits within the know l edge of this community resulted in favor of the tax. The Chairman, himself, we understand, having been a party to one of these suits at one time, and at another, the advocate of a St-ue lax for Railroad purposes. In justice, however, t > some of the persons who participated in the meeting, and who were instininentiil in raising opposi tion to iho tax, we must state, that their views were changed upon hear ing the true status of the affairs of the Railroad and grounded their opposi tion. \Ve hope Iho remainder will likewise hear the voice of reason and ahand- ri a course Mint cannot but en tail, high heights (jus a perpetual't(i.r) arid ( mharrassuieiit aril poverty upon the county and section fur the future. ’i'he limn -y they propose to expend in resisting the tax will pay the taxes of many of them, and give impetus to ! propose'will' make them j'uorcr, 'and distract, the harmony and enterprise of the county. They forget 100, that the money they raise is not all that must he spent to no purpose —if they attack the Inferior Court, the Inferior Court will be obliged to defend itself, and another lawyer must be feed to defend the suit. The county treasury, there foie, will have to hear tho burden, and those gentlemen who are endeav oring to avoid tho Railroad tax wid have to replenish the treasury they emptied in a law suit. If now limy shoul I empty their own pockets , com pel the Inferior Court to empty the County Treasury and then fail in their law -uit— what then ‘t Would not all men rid ieu I e them ? We complain ol hard /inns -that we are too pool-to lie Id an all- important Rail road, ami yet, in dauyrrous times, we get at loggerheads about l< 20 ets on the hundred dollars ,” go to law spend all the money in our pockets, empty tho Comity Treasury, cripple our Rail road enterprise, cheat the poor of tlu-ir dues at the hands ol the Treasurer, ruin our credit at lm i.e and abroad and impoverish the county. Small as that sum is you will not be able to declare it your dividend, for you must pay the ex pense of the suit, and even then you may have to go hack to the polls and lie ayain defeated on the same issue. \\ e si eerely hope those of our eit zens, some of them intelligent gen- j tinmen for whom wo have a high re | sped, will candy and dispassionately consider what course they have mark ed eiit for themselves and to what it is likely to lead tu this time of appro* j hension an 1 trouble. OUR COLORED FRIENDS. { [it seems difficult for some of our colored friends to understand the mysteries of the press, and the consti tutional right of liberty of speech —■ We understand that we have given offence to many of them by publishing and referring to an article on the ru mored insurrection among the colored I people. It is our right as a join unlist to publish and comment on the news - of the country and no one has proper cause for offence ; but we assure our colored friends, that if injustice was j done them, it was not done by ««, it j was done by a Yankee paper, publish ed in a Yankee State, the Cincinnati Enquirer. Wc did not originate the the report, nor would we knowingly do them injustice. If they arc inno cent of the charge made in Northern papers, they have the means of setting them*elves right by publishing that innocence, and we shall he [ leased to give them the use of our columns for any respectful communication on the suilj ct. Hit. Editor: 1 would not intrude upon your columns did I not think some good may come out of the large I‘ublc Meeting, he’d in the Court! House on Saturday las’, in opposition \ to collecting the Railroad Tax recent, ly imposed by the Inferior Court. 'J he real obje;t of that meeting was ! not explained, and the Chairman, as clever and honorable a gentleman as resides in our State, and possessing intelligence and stern integrity as he : does, failed to fathom the true ob,ect i of those who planned the meeting.— ! 'l'he true motive was anil is to enlist the feelings and excite the passions of the country people against the tax, in order to get the country people to sub scribe a large amount of money to help a half dozen di-contentcd Town gentlemen, whudo nut wish to pay all the expense of a long and expensive lawsuit against the Mayor and Alder men of the 'Town of Tliomasville. The County Subscription they do not propose to i Iter, and are satisfied that it will be money thrown away to | attack it constitutionally. This qms i tion has been thcroughly tested before I the Courts of Georgia, and sustained by ‘he highest legal tribunal in our Suite. But Uh gentlemen wish to test the legality of ill • Town election, on ilie JI lint of ain j lily. They do .not attack the eon -t nit -.iiii'ity of the subscription, but simply iho illegality of the eleition. A din order to get tlm mittlir before the Gourts if the country, hey propose to raise a cer tain sum >f money to fee a lawyer, which fee is demanded in money lie lore bringing the action. And tliat j they may he able to raise the money, I they got m the meeting on Saturday last. They arc willing to attack I lie County simply for policy, viz. iho fee proseetles hath cases, and they make the countryn.an puv rn-arly all tho lawyers lee ayainst the Town Cuitm and ' lie country people have nothing to • o with the Town tax, and | why should they be drawn into a law 1 suit and be made to pay the heavy ex penso of it when they have no inter est in the matter. 'I hose Town gen tUllien are v.Hideous kind. They any to the country people, we are going to have a grea: least in town, and if you will bring ii your turkeys, chickens, lambs. Jiigs. eggs, etc , etc., and eon tribute then for tho feast, you may come In and help us eat! That is just the ease now; t.hcv are going to have a great and expensive lawsuit against the Town Council, and if the country people will pay the lawyei’s fee just coma in, friends, arid we will introduce you to the lawyer, and wc will have a grand speech ; ti l yi u can laugh with us ! Now let me advise you to throw aside such advisers. Have your wits to yourselves. The fees Roil you will he oa'lcd upon to pay the lawyer will pay all your ll ii/roail Ta.rrs, and if the K lilroud tax is paid you will have a Railroad instead of a lawsuit. You will thus save time, save your nionev, ly, increase the value of your lands, add wealth to your county and town, induce iniigranis to come amongst us, and thus, in the end, decrease vour taxes.
