Op the other hand, the general Northern lawgupge is that, the ; National cause has prevailed * that the Union has been saved • that the great, curse of the country has been destroy ed ; that the people everywhere must nc w contrive t i heal the wounds of the war, and bring back Universal prosper ity. Whatever aofipn* thies and animosities they still may cherish and, express, they yet both re train from any attempt, to perpetuate a hostHe Spir.t toward* the Southern people, ■ Os course,,there is more of less se verity of speech still employed in the North in reference to Jeff 1 <avis and ‘other leaders of the rebellion'. This cessation of nil the old bitter language, between |he -two -sections, conics-, primarily from the liietunl re- • snect. generated by the -war.- The'old Northern notion that the South, had degenerated into-a race of domineer ing, pusillanimous blusterers and brag gart's ; and the old . Southern notion ! that the North had lost every element ! V of manhood in the passion for • gain, and would submit to anything noner than fight, have both been thor >ugh~ ly annihilated. The tug of . war for four years has shown, the real stuff of men on both sides of Mason and Dix- proved there is no essential difference in courage, or fortitude, or any of the high qualities, which make up the real stamina of a people.. It has been brought home to. the sense of every persob in the land, that the. dwellers in the North and the dwellers in the South have the same blood, and that no finer exists. It would be mor ally impossible that a struggle main-, tained with such terrible .tenacity should fail to infuse, respect, into the soul of each adversary, or that such respect should not manifest itself so soon as the struggle should close and its hot passions pass away. The present moderation and’ deco rum observed between the North and South will.gradually change into war mer manifestations of friendship, ’ if that class of politicians, who can live i pn.fuischiev it&tion, are kept un~ ■ der proper constraint.
