their Government, and if trusted my

in the above sentence is contained
the quint essence of Republicanism.
It is the great, foun lation stone upon
which the grand superstructure of
(Nnstitutioiml. Liberty was eicclcd.
It is as comprehensive as it is elegant.
It is beyond cavii; because it is very
truth: its declaration is the exhibition
of moral heroism.
-It recognizes in the masses the
impersonation of sovereignty. They
are the Government. Their fiat is the
law. They elevate men to office, and
ho or them with confidence. They
frust and should he trusted. They
roust be trusted. The President, the
Congress, tho Judiciary are servants
ot tho people. By the latter were
they created. At the hands of their
creators do they live. “.Shall the
thing formed say to him that formed
it” “Humble thyself; yea, in ap
proachins; us, thou shait crawl on tligp
knees!”
Shall the servants of the people be
allowed to take such a position? Mo!
never! Planting ourselves upon the
firm rock ol the Constitution, we are
resolved that it from its place shall
fly sooner than we.
“I'he people must be trusted.” • It
is their inalienable right Andrew
John on. advoc3tei this policy. Wo
should give him our hearty support.
He it is, who is endeavoring to rid the
body politic of the leeches of radical
ism’ that are gorging themselves with
the life blood of law ami liberty.
Unless the radicals are defeated in
ther plans, American liberty, tor which
so much blood has been shed and so
piany hardships endured, will b# left
to our hands a mere skeleton —lifeles*
and cold.
Rabies. —The effect babies have on
progression i self-evident. No one
ever knew a baOy inferior to any pre -
ceding baby. On the contrary, each
one is a little in advance o’ any yet
born, and when we think of the vast
number yet to be. and how every one
will be a trifle superior to its predeces
sor, what a glorious future awaits us?
We shall eventually resell perfection.
How can those persons who Ueleive
that we retrograde instead of progress
reconcile this fact with their absurd
theory?
Provisioial Governor Johnson-
Two or three weeks ago we seated
that this gentleman once occupied the
rostrum with the Hon. W. L. Yancey,
at a public meeting in Columbus, Ga.,
and that both gentlemen made strong
secession speeches ! W e called upoD
our Columbus confreres to correct owr
statement if we were incorrect, as it was
our desire not to misrepresent any
man. Up to the present writing we
have seen no contradiction of the state
ment. by our cotemporaries, and we
take it for grauteu that it is true that
Mr. Johnson was an original secess
ionist, and that President Johnson was
deceived in his appointment of him as
the reconstuedng ageut for this State.
There is not ting particularly objection
able in the fact that Mr. Johnson had
been at original scceesjonist, if he had
only remained eoasi.-tent and perform
ed his whole duty to the South at the
culmi: ation of his political teachings,
instead of deserting his friends when,
the tug of war came on. Lie helped
to inaugurate tho war by his teach
ings. He ought to have been consist*
ent enough to fauv: stuck to his teach,
ings. And now for him to* step for
ward as a Union man, and to tell the
people of Georgia that they ‘.re rebels
and renegades i.j too uch for human
flesh to stand. —Lujranje Reporter.

The “Minister if the Gospel’ has
his commission, it authorizes him to
preach the good ijcws of reconciliation i
of ii an with God. Its great proclama- j
ti >n is ‘ Peace on earth, and good will j
towards men.”’ . •’
lie has no other'commission than
this—no commission to preach poll •
tics —no commission to preach war,
and least o! all, civil war, war amongst
brethren, war the most jitter, deadly,
and rti-organizing that can possibly
prevail, war which tramples under foot
the sweet charities of life, and makes
a mockery of ail religious sentiments,
war which desolates whole regions,
destroys churches, drives off the sliep
erd and scatters the flock, war which
the seeds of inveterate social prejudice
and animosity.
And yet, strange to say, there is in j
the land a e!a-s of people styling them ‘
selves “Ministers o the Gospel,” act
ing under a commission of pretended
commission, as such, who from the very
outset of the war just closed, constitu
ted themselves its fiercest advocate
and trumpeters. From ti.e pulpit and
the rostrum, tliese men wolves in sheeps
clothing, they should be called have 1
been making the warcry to ring thro gh
out the land. In this, they have been
persistent, indomitable, declamatory
and furious. They appeared to have
altogether forgotten their sacred office,
or deemed it no longer necessary to
maintain the decent appearance of that
high character In their utterances
none were so bitter, so extreme, so ini
veterate, so irreconcilable, so bkody, j
so Patriotic.
It is a shame to the American peo
ple that these men have been tolera
ted —suffered from sabbah to iSabbuth
from Conference to Conferc ice, from
Synod to Synod, to belch out their
venomous, maliguant fury.
Among the curiosities at the Ohio
State Fair, was a printer with a five
dollar bill in his pocket. A commit
tee of citizens took him in charge and
exhibited bim at ten cents a sight.
After the show was over,, it leaked -out
that the five dollar bill in his pocket
wa- for five dollars due his wash wo- \
