Our readers will find at the Book Store of these gentlemen, newspapers and magazines of all kinds, regularly furnished hy every mail, to sup ply the demand of our reading public. |gs-Mr. C. M. Ladd, the Traveling Agent for the Georgia State Directory, has been in our city for several days past. YVe have met this gentleman several times, and we are glad to learn that he has been lib erally encouraged by th - * merchants and other business men of Thomasville. The work lie represents is tiuly one of ere-it utility to all. and we hope he will meet with as liberal patronage elsewhere a he has here. AYe call the attend nos our readers to the advertisement in auother column. Editor or TtiF. Qt itman Baxnfr.—By his card, we find that Col. C. AY'. Styles, of the Quitman Banner, accorded to us the honor of a visit to our sanctum on Tuesday, b t unhappily we were engaged at the Court House and did not meet him. As the Colonel is a lawyer as well ns editor, and our Court will continue for about two weeks, we hope he will find if interesting to remain among us for several days, and thus afford us another opportunity of mak ing his acquaintance. AYe will take this occasion to say, that the Banner is a well conducted paper, neatly gotten up and full of spirit ; and shouldany of our readers feel disposed to extend their patronage in the direction of Quitman, we recommend it cheerfully to their considora tien. r*l. CMARL.es S not KtYKI.I.. By reference to our new advertisement®, it will he seen that this ripe scholar nnd ropular teacher pnblihes his Card as a Civil Engineer. llis capacity is too well known to need comment, and we simply ask attention to his proposition. fresii nnrrtw. AYp are glad to see that cur clever old friend and fellow citizen. Physician and Druggist, P. S. Bower, lias returned from bis visit North, much improved in health and spirit. During his absence he laid in a fresh supply of drugs, and his shelve® and drawers have all been filled tip with the test article® knffwn to the market. He * now, therefore, prepared to meet every e mand for Drugs, either by wholesale or retail. The ladies will find in his show eases, choice perfumes, nnd many otlier precious articles belonging to their department, but here unmentionable. McLEAN’S CORDIAL. This article, so popular in the South be fore the war. lias again made its appear ance on the Doctor’s shelves, though diffi oult, we understand, to be procured even in the Northern markets. Til OVf in SI PI RIOR C OFRT. The June Term of this Court commenced if* session her on Monday last, lion. A. II Hansel! presiding. As the dockets have long been encumbered with old cases. Judge Hanaell has determined to dispose of them, if possible, nnd the session will accordingly, v? understand, be pr tracted through next week. There are very few non-resident Lawyers in attendance; but we n ticedthe presence yesterday of fV. B. Bennett. C. AY. Styles and J G McCall, from Quitman, an ! Hoa. E. T. Vann, from Madison, Fla. Up to the present time bu-iness has pro gressed verj well, and we notice that th” able Grand Jury was after evil doers in good earnest. AYe hope they will be able by their promptness an! vigor, to make crime less frequent than it has been of late in this section. AYOTHER REXCONTRK A difficulty occurred in Thomasville, on Thursday last, between Jas Russell, Agent of the Express, and AYiilie Davies, a youth of seventeen, in which Russell was sho’ three times with a pistol and dangerously ■wounded. His physicians reported him in a critical condition late yesterday evening, two balls having entered itis back, which baffled nil he skill of the physicians to re move. He has been under arrest, though confined to his own house by the severity of his wounds, ever since the difficulty oc curred. under the charge of an assault, with intent to commit murder upon the person of young Davies, w o bravely and success fully defended his life. It is believed that Russell will die from the effect of his wounds; but should Ise survive, his trial will speedily come off in the Superior Court, now in se®sion. nnd through motives of pru dence and delicacy we forbear, for the pre sent, giving any details on the subject. It may not be improper to remark, however, that public sentiment entirely acquits young Davies and justifies his conduct on the occasion. The Tallahassee Floridian should take the trouble to ascertain the facts, be fore it proceeds, to pronounce judgment upon the people of Thomasville. and not promulgate a tissue of extravagant reports in advance of examination. The editors of the Floridian should have learned from txperience , by this time, that “common re port ”is not to be believed. Had we pub lished report, wc should have stated that Lightfoot shot Richardson through the breast, and that Richardson cut Lightfoot’s throat. Neither of these reports were true, and when the Floridian investigates the matter, it may have different impressions of mind. As to the “ leaven of Unionism ” which the Floridian says “showed itself in Thom asville during the existence of the Confed eracy.” we are not responsible, as we were absent in the army ; but that ought to be an extenuating circumstance in the judg ment of the Floridian , when we consider ■which side that piper takes in the •■ Thom asv.lle Outrage.” Col. Seward, Judge Love and others, may. perhaps be able to explain for the Fioruhan l the origin and extent of the “leaven of Unionism,” and als enlighten that journal as to whether it was a “ Union element” which attempt ed to slay Richardson. Had Lightfoot been a Union man. Richardson would never have fined and imprisoned him, and con sequently he nould never have been under the necessity of seeking satisfaction. \Ye are no apologist for either party, nor shall ■we take upon us the defence or reproba tion of either, but leave it for an impartial Court when all the facts shall have been elicited'. AYe do defend, however, the community at lat ge from the imputations of the Fiori dun, and object to having our people an nounced as having participated en masse in a private street brawl. Elsewhere in our columns to-dav the Floridian may find fresh matter for its di gestion. with this difference, however, that neither of the belligerents were “Federal officers, soldiers, or colored ” men. the new advertisemants in ihi* issue. RAILROA TANARUS EXTEXIDJf Tiie President of the Atlantic & Gulf- Road is out in a lengthy address to the citiiens of Savannah, in behalf ot the con nexion between the Atlantic & Gulf and the Florida Rail Road, from Lawton, No. 12, on the former, to Lire Oak Sta'ion, on the latter, a distance of forty-seven and a half miles. It is well known that this con nection was made during the war as a mi i j tarv necessity, but as a part of the iron i used was furnished by the Florida Road, it , has since been taken up by the Company, and the connection thus discontinued. The i object of Mr. Screven now, is to re-lay the I track and put the road in operation. He tells the ci'ixens of Savannah, that if they will subscribe $75,000, this connection will ’ be put in operation in three months from j the Ist of July next. j On this subject we remark, that before | the war the citizens of Florida opposed 1 any connection with the Atlantic ic Gulf Road in that direction, on the ground that such a connection would render the whole of Middle Florida tributary to Savannah, 1 and tints strike a death blow to the hopes ! of Fernandina as a commercial port. Have j they changed their sentiments 7 IMIffIAA TllUni'R. On Saturday evening last, the 16th inst., I occurred, sixteen mile? from Thbtnasville, bn the road leading to Troupville, Loundes j County, Georgia, one of the most inhuman butcheries it has ever been our lot to re cord. The facts, as near as-we been . able to learn them, aTe as follows; Joseph Miller, a citizen of Thomas Coun ty. was quietly sitting in the piazza of his. house, when several parties, white men, ■ came.upon his premises armed with guns and other weapons. Hearings noise,.as i.l persons walking around his house, Mr, Miller asked in a loud voice who was there He was answered by the discharge of a gun, the contents of which lodged in tlie wall just above his head. The report of three guns was heard during the contest, one of which, it is supposed, was fired by • Mr. Miller at his assailants. The freed , men on Mr. Miller’s place rushed toward the scene of conflict, but were threatened [and driven back by the murderers until j their bloody work was completed. After they retired Mr. Miller was found dead, cut to pieces with a knife. This intorma ! tion was qnic ly brought to town by the freedmen, and several gentlemen, includ ing the County Solicitor, Coroner, &c., hastened to Mr. Miller's residence, and confirmed by their observation the report of the freedmen-. The murderers had made ; good th ir escape during this interval, and up to this time none of them have been ar rested. The freedmen who were threat ened and driven away by the assassins, j report that they recognized among them, Azariah Stallings and Thomas Thompson, neighbors of the deceased, but tliai there i were many others. This is one of the bloodiest and most inhuman outrages ever ! perpeti nted in this section, and calls for the most prompt and determined acfiou on I |he part of the authorities. • = CHART ATVO COMPASS The editor of the Bainbridge Chart emd ! Compass, Mr, W. M. Russell, paid us a visit on his return from a trip to Savannah, and we are pleased to hear, that the Merchants and others of that eity, appreciating the importance of the location of his paper, opened their hearts and accorded him a liberal patronage. Elsewhere we have in . serted a Card for the Chart ami Compass, to which we call the attention of our readers. I -**■*”- Proceedings of Connell. cotnvcii. ROOM, Thoma.svii.le, June 18th, 1866. Why Spain Makes War on Chili, The quarrel between Spain and Chilt is explained by the New York j Commercial Advertiser as follows : A brief glance at the rise and pro gress of this struggle will enable us to more clearly comprehend the pres ent situation. In the month of March, lbG4 the Peruv an Government b - came involved with Spain in regard to certain questions arising out of cl ims of Spanish residents against 15 ru. A local dispute had arisen at 1 ulanrbo between some Peruvian land owners and Spanish colonists, in j which two perst ns were killed and wounded. ’J he Peruvian courts at ’ once proceeded to investigate the mat ter, but the Spanish Government, evi dently in search of a pretext, interfer ed in the case wh le the investigation was going on, and ultimately seized ’ the Chincha Island. Insolent demands followed. These demands were ac ceeded to by the Government, but the I indignant people overthrew the gov* emment. and when the new Pre a idcnt did not act with sufficient celerity in wiping out the disgrace, they over threw him too, and elected to power the present incumbent, who signalized his adveut by declaring war forthwith against the invader and joining in an aihance with Chili. The latter had early in the controversy shown stiong sympathy for Peru, allowing, among other acts, the Peruvian war ships to receive coal and enlist men in Val paraiso, while coal was refused to the Spanish vessel®, because it had bi en declared c< ntraband” of war- The Spaniards were, therefore, indig nant at the Chilians, and as soon as the Peruvians had acquieseed in their urgent demands, they turned their at tention to the former, exp* cting that they would ‘‘knuckle undei” without ceremony. On the 17th of September, I*os, Admiral Pareji dispatched a long communication from on board his flagship to the Chilian Minister, in which he complain; and of the partialitv in the matter of supplying coals to the Peruvians, and further, that insulting cries and threats against Spain were permitted with impunity in front of the residence in Valparaiso of the Spanish Legation. Admiral Pa'reja then proceeded to say that unless the Chilians pclogized for these acts, .and “one of the forts of the republic salut ed the Span sh ensign with a salvo of twenty-one guns” war would at once be declared. The high-spirited Chili ans at once spurned these insolent de mands and forthwith proceeded with great enthusiasm to prepare for a strug gle with Spam. Though a b ockade was immediately established, Admiral Pareja was utterly unable-’to make it effective; and finally, when a squad of daring Chilian sailors captured the Covadomra, he was so mortified and chagrined that he ended his life with a Derringer.
