Mr.’Fott r. The extension of Main ’
Street, with the very considerable expense
Incidental thereto, has been the topic of t
much criticism by the tax payers of our
Town. The commendable course of his
Honor the Mayor, in respecting the wishes
of a Urge majority of citizens, when peti
tioned by them a short time since, relative
to the street extension, is fully appreciated
by the pe -plc whose interests he manifests t
an honest purpose te protect. The simple j
question of extending the street a few hun- ,
dred yards our people care but little about,
for already roads diverge obliquely to the !
right and left at the terminus of the street 1
in front of Mr. Meßain’s. affording abun- I
dan* -nfle? an and inlet for all practical pur- >
poses; yet “the street must be extended, ,
cost what it may ” —and the people already I
groaning under heavy- taxation, must be
tixed vet tenner to meet this unwarranted
expenditure of money, and to what pur
pose f—the benefit alone of a fear real es
tate holders, who doubtless anticipate a ,
greatly enhanced value of their wealth
thereby. The result of the whole matter I
being, that ninety-nine one-hundredth of i
your citiiens. not in the slightest degree j
benefitted. are required to “ foot the bill,” |
while the interested fete have the pleasure :
of receiving the profits ! Now, Mr. Editor,
that is t crong: The expense of this exten- ■
sion should be borne by those who become !
the immediate beneficiaries—let those in- j
dividual* shoulder the bulk of the expense,
and a moderate tax our people would be
ready to meet.
• But. Mr Editor, this is not all. Madam 1
Rumor says, the majority of the Board of j
Aldermen are determined to accomplish I
their object, at all hazards—extend the
street right or wrong, “cost what it may.”
I can scarcely credit this. Surely no set
of men having been clothed with authority
by a Constitution, to protect their interest,
would sc far forget themselves as to sac
rifice those interests to the advancement of j
their.own private purposes, and thereby *
compromise the pledges assumed by them,
when they accepted the trust reposed in
them.- From mj personal knowledge of I
these gentlemen, I wiR not believe it until j
I.see if.
.Permit here a suggestion Work the
streets already made, but almost impassable !
for want of a iitfle work Certain streets. 1

Dear Sir: Our General Fuperin
tondant has. tn-day, transmitted for
publieatrin in the Bainbridge papers,
an advertisement of a reduction of
twentyfivc per centum on the general
rates of freight over the Road, from
Thomasville for all articles destined to,
and coming from points West of the
Ochloekonee river.
This has been author'zed by the
Board of Directors, with a v’ew to of
fer to the people of Deeatur the only
facilities in their power, before the
extension of the Road ; and to present
inducements t<S the people of the coun
ties west of the Ochloekonee, to make
tbeir shipments to and from the Sea-,
port of their own State.
We deeply lament our inability to
undertake the immediate extension of
the Road further west; which if ever
attempted, could not be accomplished
in time for the operations of the im~
pending season ; but we trust that the
liberal reduction oti rates of transport
tation, will open facilities nearly, if
not Quite, eqtiivolcnt to the construc
tion of the Road to a point beyond the
Ochloekonee; and will satisfy those
who have been, for several years, de
prived ot the results of their subscrip
tions, that the Directors are not un
mindful of a disappointment which
they themselves have deeply realized.
The people west of the Ochloekonee
now have cheap Railroad transporta
tion at their command. Their cotton
will be carried 200 miles at, say 83:40
per bale of 500ib, or at the rate ot 68
cents per lOOfh. with a similar reduc
tion of 25 per cent on each class of
1 articles both ways from Thomasville,
1 free of charges for insurance.
T trust that such arrangements will
prove satisfactory to all concerned, and
folly enable the people of the country
to command every advantage from the
Road, available at this time. It places
1 them on fair terms of equality with
1 patrons of the lino in its immediate
1 vicinity, and enables them to reaeh
the largest market on the South At
lantic, without excessive expense.
1 SavanDnh offers every commercial fa>
cility: her merchants are numerous,
1 enterprising and reliable : her shipping
1 comes from many parts of the world.
1 She has a large steam marine connec
ting her, almost daily, with Boston,
New York Philadelphia and Balti
’ more; and she is about to open direct
’ steam communication with the English
! markets. Produce can be laid in her
1 warehouses in 48 hours from Thomas
ville, without cost of insurance,—it can
be placed in New York in five days
from Thomasville.
Savannah is the Seaport ot Georgia,
1 and she has nobly sustained her posi
< tion. Fler lines of Railroad eoromu
-1 nieation lead to every section of the
State; and she has held out her hands
to TVeatur, the extreme South western
1 corner of the State, subscribing to the
I Atlantic A Gulf Railroad nearly two
! millions of dollars : thereby sufieriue
1 in common with the people of Peca
1 tuT from the non-completion of the
’ Railroad. Will the people of Deeatur
remember this for Savannah, when
T they choose their market, and remem
-1 her, too. that she offers them the cheap
est, most certain and speediest trans
* oortation, quick, sales at advantageous
; prices, a market which the planter and
! the merchant can reach personally,
from the banks of the Flint, in twcoty
four horns, and meet the welcome due
to citizens of a common State.
It would seem unnccefsiry to add
more than has been alreadv pnblished.
I as to the extension of the Railroad.to
1 Bainbridge ; but r.s public attention ap
pears to cortinne un a isfied on this
subject, pemr.t me to say, that the
amount of trading already aecompliah
-1 ed west of Thomasville, (erteoding in
deed to within a few miles of Bain
bridge,) ought to be a sufficient guar
antee that the recommencement ot the
work cannot he long delayed. But I
will add that it is expected that the
comine of the next year will inaogu
ate the resumption, wot merely of the
extension t* Bainbridire. bnt pf efforts
to carry into effect the grat objects ,
of oar charter, namely, “a speedy con- I
neetion with the Gulf of Mexico at i
Pensacola or Mobile.”
Very respectfully,
Your ob’t servant.
JOHN SCREVEN,
President.
