The proceedings of the railroad
meeting published ; n our i--no to-day
will be read with interest by tluse who
are friendly to the enterprise of con
structing a railr-ad between Thonias
vitlc and Albany. 1 lie meetiug was
enthusiastic and passed the resolutions
unanimously, thus showing that 1 lie
people of this County are in earnest
about rhe development of the country,
and that thev arc determined to put
U (he wheel ‘i lu
resolutions ask aid of the State but
do's any man suppose that in case the
state should not choose to lend her aid
that therefore, the enderprise will fail?
Wc hope not. The County of Thomas
is authorized by act of the Legislature
to subscribe $200,01*0 to thestoek of
this Company, and the Corporation ot
Thomnsville rs authorized by the same
to subscribe SIOO,OOO. This foots up
$300,000, and 1 r contend that with
this start the road can he built without
aid from the state. While we endeavor
therefore to get aid from the state, let
no man be discouraged by the possi l
bil ty of failure to obtain it. Thomas
County alone can build the R>id, if she
i- determined on it. and we would tsk
no better investment for her capital.
Let her build this road and the time
is not far off when our County and
state taxes will bo paid by its divi
dends. As the Wes ern & Atlantic
railroad was a source of immense re
venue to the state cf Georgia, paying
into be Treasury $300,000 per month,
so, the South Georgia & Florida road
will be a s oiree of immense revenue
to Thomas County.
Lit us goto work therefore, whether
tilg state aids us rw n t. If we need
help \vo can gpt it, if not from the
State, from ‘Orcign CupiM i sts, or ftom
the Atlantic A Gulf road, whose inter
• ests iur road will subserve, and win
will doubtless become, if not already,
awa c of the interest they have in the
enterprise.
Thomas County should have the act
authorizing her to subscribe $200,006,
1 amended at oncoj authorizing her to
subscribe $30(1,000, and she should
immediately subscribe that sm and

At their Hope's /:v( I. —The N. Y
World says tbc South lias notl ing
worse to fear, as a conseqencc of the
late elections, than a protracted exclu
sion from Congress. Negro suffrage
cannot be forced on them except by
an amendment to the Constitution,
which they can checkmate. New
penaltio* for treason are equally im
possible, bv the prohibition to pass ex
post facto laws. The old penalties have
been remitted by the President’s proc
lamation of amnesty and bis individual
pardons. TlieS ate governments which
have been formed in the South cannot
be upset, because, Congress never
comes in contact with them except in
1 judging of their competency to furnish
credentials to members of that, body.
Congress having already done its ut
most against the South, that section
has nothing to fear in consequence
ol these elections, beyond what it al
ready suffers.

The solemn ‘rmh, contained in the a

But while we are thus called on, to mourn

Our Brother and lat* Worshipful Master
