Harris, Chief t>f Police of Newberry, cays: “I suf fered for a number of years with %ldney complaint. There was a dull tachlng across the small of my back ‘that was worse at night and made me feel miserable all the time. The kidney •ecretlons were dark and full of sedi ment, and lack of control compelled me to rise a number of times during 1 the night. Between this annoyance 'and the backache It was impossible ‘for mo to get much sleep and my health was being undermined. I tried « number of remedies, but nothing helped me until I got Doan’s Kidney T*411s. The use of this remedy accord ing to^ directions promptly brought about a chftuge for the better. After using two boxes tb# backache all left me, the kidney secretions cleared up ■and the action of tho kidneys became normal.” A FREE TRIAL of this great kidney gnediclne which cured Obief Harris will be mailed on application to any part of the United States. Earthworms cannot live without moisture; their food la also dependent upon it. During droughts they bur row down to moisture, often three or four feet, and It is only after rains during humid weather, or In damp earth that they may be dug up Just under tho surface, or are seen reach ing far out of their holes, or even travelling on tho surface to new locall- ties, generally at night. Vegetable mould often grows upon pavements, and worms frequent such places. Often they crawl upon the hard side walks and cannot burrow down again. They are found in greatest numbers wherever tbero is decaying vegeta tion. Worms are friends of man and serve an Important economic pur pose.—St. Nicholas. THE CARE OF LAMPS. It is not an uncommon thing for women who are fastidious in other matters te pay little or no attention to lamps except to fill them when nec essary and trim the wicks when they become uneven. Lamps should be kept perfectly clean on the inside as well as on the outside. They should bo care fully examined and filled each morn ing, and when necessary cleaned out and trimmed. A GRAY BEDROOM. A gray bedroom is a novel idea, yet a very attractive scheme for such a room is described in an art publication. The walls were to be treated with a pale gray satin paper which combines equally well with gray or white enam eled gray, while the rugs in white and yellow give lightness to the scheme. A wnshstnnd set of yellow ware, a screen of yellow linen taffeta, clear white cur tains, and a few brass candlesticks complete a room as cool and peaceful as can be pictured. TO WASH COLORED STOCKINGS. Make strong lather of soap and hot water, as hot as the hand can bear. After washing tho stockings in this lather rinse in cold water, with, if the articles bo colored, a little salt thrown in to prevent the colors running. It is very necessary to wring as much water out as possible, and thon wring again In a dry towel. Dry immediately be fore a fire. The articles must be hung up, not laid over anything. On no ac count must soap Itself be rubbed on, nor, If the article be colored, must it be allowed to iio about In folds before drying, for by doing so it will stain itself. SOME USES*FOR VINEGAR. Vinegar will keep the hands white and smooth, and prevent chapping when exposed to the cold air after washing in hot or soapy water. Be fore drying the hands rub over them a lenspoonful of vinegar and the relief will bo very great. Th© toughest beef or chicken can b« made tender and palatable by putting a good spoonful of cider vinegar in the pot In which it Is boiling, or in the Juice with which it Is basted if roast ing in a pan. Ono-half pint of vinegar, one table* spoonful of salt, one teaspoonful of cayenne pepper and one pint of boll log water will cure night sweats. Mix and let cool; strain, and sponge the pa tlent at bedtime. In warm weather bathe with diluted vinegar; it is cooling and will make the skin soft. USEFUL FACTS TO KNOW. Here are a few suggestions in regard to the things which a careful house wife may find it wise to teach the new maid; Tench her to put ns much furniture as possible outside the room before be ginning to sweep, to brush the rest and cover it with dust cloths, gays the Philadelphia Telegraph. Tench her to soak newspapers In cold water, squeeze them, tear into bits, and sprinkle on the floor to prevent dust flying. Tench her to rub the carpet well after sweeping with a elolh wrung out of clean ammonia water—one table spoonful to two quarts of water. Teach her to wipe the polished floor with n damp cloth and then rub with a dry one. Tench her to cover h soft broom with a clean cloth, and brush the ceilings and walls. Tench her to clean tho windows while tho dust is settling. Teach her to use a flat paint brush for window frames and latches. Tench her to remove the spots finger marks on white woodwork with a cloth wrung out of warm wfcter and dipped in prepared chalk.—Massa' h:; setts Ploughman. 5T IMPROVED SAW MILL ON EARTH. .arge Engine* and Bollera supplied mptly. Londoners Who “Go Gray” and Black Again Within a Few Hours. Not only is “emotional” hair well known to medical specialists, but every hair dresser of experience rec ognizes it frequently in connection with his own customers. With some peculiarly constituted people the hair is affected by every passing emotion, and uot only does it reach the extremes of crispness, but it varies in color vastly. This latter peculiarity is bo well recog nized by every hair dresser that somo members of that calling are prepared to say definitely of a given regular customer, "Blank is not well, or he has some great trouble on his mind just now.” j Many & man who appears exceed ingly gray on one day Is comparative ly dark haired the next, and cases aro known where the single white locks of hair that sometimes are found on a head otherwise wholly black have disappeared almost entire ly and then come again. That It to say, the white tuft ha3 gone almost black lilco the surrounding hair and has then become quite white, again, and so on. We all know what uso Shakespeare and other dramatists and poets have made of the influence of emotion upon human hair, but one of the most cel ebrated detective inspectors now at Scotland Yard said to the wrltor in regard to this very subject: "When I have put my hand sud denly on to the shoulder of somo man I was arresting I have actually heard the rustling of his hair, or thought that I could; at least, I have seen all the hair about tho ears palp ably move like that of an animal, and when that man has been sen tenced afterwnrd his hair, that had before seomed to be crisp and bristly, has appeared dark and thin and poor.” Two of the best known hair dress ers In London havo assured the writ er that they havo customers who go gray and black again within a few hours. One Instanced the case of a financial magnate who came to grief and was tried for fraud. During the proceedings he went iron gray, but directly he had been acquitted his balr returned to its normal color— of course, quite without any artificial means. Another strange fact Is that there are a comparatively limited number of people whoso hair will never take any dye, no matter what it may be, successfully and thoroughly. Bottle after bottle of hair dye may be ex pended upon it, but It will never take mjr pigment properly.—London Tit- Bits I Cat Nurses Squirrels. A Joplin (Mo.) dispatch to the Chi cago Inter-Ocean states: William Williams, a farmer living south of Avilla. near this city, has a cat that nurses a litter of squirrels. Four young tox squirrels were taken to tho house recently from the nest where they were found, although thv* family cat had a litter of kittens, she exhibits motherly fondness for the squirrels, and makes regular trips back and forth from the house to the barn, and licks and nurses the squlr- dels as tenderly as she does her kit tens. Tbo net circulation of the national bankB of this country now amounts to $432,247,605 and is the highest ever known. It is frightful to contemplate the number of germs all that paper money represents and still tiie na tion manages to survive. Evidently the germ theory has had no effect on the circulation of paper money and has certainly not made the public any more reluctant to receive wealth in that form. Mall Carried by Reindeer Team. The capacity of the reindeer for team work Is remarkable. His hoofs aro very broad and do not penetrate tho snow crusts. His avorage weight Is about 400 pounds. He will swiftly draw a sled carrying COO pounds, and with this load can cover thirty, fifty and even ninety miles a day. The reindeer teams now carry the malls from Kotoebqe to Point Barrow, a distance of 650 miles—the most north erly post route in the world. No food is carried for the deer. At the end of hla Journey, or at any stopping place, he is turned loose, and at once breaks through the snow to the white moss, which serves as food. It costs nothing to feed hlmi As the white settlements increase In the mineral bearing parts of Alaska, and In many places remote from railway and steamboat transportation, the rein deer express will be one of tho most Important factors in territorial life.
