GEORGIA PEACH SEASON TURNS OUT SHORT Atlanta', Oa., Aug. 7.—The peach shipping season In Georgia Is at an end and from start to finish, It has been any thing but a favorable one. To begin with the crop wns short and rains setlng In during the ripening period, caused an epidemic of brown rot, which meant destruction galore. Up to Saturday night only 1,956 ears had moved by fright and ex press shipments will probably aggre gate 200 cars, which will make the total around2,200 cars. Early In the season It ldoked Ilk the yield would reach between 2,500 and 3,000 cars and the rains may be charged the fQURTH REGIMENT shortage. Few growers made money on their peaches this season. Those who sold on trees at prices ranging from 90 cents to 91.25 per crate are congrat ulating themselves while on the other hand there are some shippers who rectly concerned, nnd ail three of the members seem to favor the bill there Is no doubt that H will become law. It will make quite a change In the legal affairs of tile county, understood that a majority If not all of the lawyers of tbe town favor the bill. A similar bill was ' pre pared some time ago but was never presented owing to a division of sentiment among the attorneys of the city. It Is suposed that the provi sions of this bill me similar though a copy of It has not been received here. If the court Is established It will do away with the county court and Judge Hansell and Solicitor Luke will be out of office, but would prob- bly seek slmUIr appointments with the city court. Tbo city court x wlll have a wider jurisdiction than the present county court. The latter Is limited to cases of 9500 or less In value. And can bo brought In city court for any amouut.City court cases can be appealed direct to tbe Su preme Cohrt and the judge can decide In a motion for a new trial. From county court theuppeals can be taken without a sayso of the judge, but must go through the Su,trior Court. The city court will practically relieve the superior court of all cases except land and divorce suits.' Tbe criminal Jurisdiction of the city end county courts arc Identical. . The salary of the city court Judge will be 91,600 a year. The salary the county court Judge Is 91,000 per annum. The now court will there fore cost the taxpayers more for sal ary and for Jurors, but the lawyers saylt will more than compensate for this In convenience. Quttmna, Cam illa, Valdosta, Dalnbrldgeand other cities of Thomnsvllle’s also all have city courts nd I be plan seems to be a favorite one. Shepherd officiating. The groom Theoe many rumora about • the dreaded je) row fever bring to mem ory the terrible scourge which vlslt- tlme Brownsville was a smaller city summer of 1880 and 1861. At that tome Brownsville was a smaller city than Thomasvljls. It ly situated on the Rio Grande river directly across from Matamoras Mexico. My fath er had J'.ri moved his family BrownsVllle. About two weeks af ter we reacbu.1 there while sitting at a front window my mother and I •aw a casket, brought out without any funeral cortege from the house across the street. Upon inquiring we learn ed that a man bad come home alck with yelow fever from Point Isabel three days before. The doors and blinds had 1 en kept closed In order to hide thu fart from the pubic. From that ono case the fever spread rapid ly, my mother being the second vic tim. Not one of our family escaped. 1 hreo passed Into the "Beyond where their voices are not heard.” 1, my self, hal three separate attacks. My brother bad two stacks, dying irom the second. These facts, course, explode In my mind the Im munity theory. Six ofour negroes, too, were sick, one of them "our old black mammy," 90 years of age. All of them recov ered. Jn that day few railroads had pen etrated Texas nnd most of the .const towns depended on New Orleans for we had no rallicad rnd within an In credibly short time after the epidemic started It wns lmpi rtiblo to get ltber In or out of town. The fever raged sc fearfully and whs so malignant that people were dying from morning till night and from night till morning in almost every family In both Brownsville and her neighbor town, Matamoras. Even after the lapse of all those long years the memory of those sad scenes Is still pu'nfully clear. Tears dim my eyes ns I rc-cnl! the agony of grief whereve- we turned. The cemetery was crowded beyond Its capacity, In a very nhort time nnd other grounds taken In. The burials were so numerous and ao hastily done many of them during tbe silent wat ches of the nlgtt that we lost In a great many Instances tbe localltyof our loved one's graves. To this day I do not know Just where my father, mother nnd brother are resting In tbe sleep that knows no awaking. Collins soon gave out, lumber was so scarce and busleneas In such demoralized condition that they could Hot be made, so even people of mean* had to lay away their precious <£ead wrappcl simply in a winding sheet. The poor were In many cases burled In the clothing they died In. One could stag qut on tire front porch at almost any bourof the night or day and see .a man, sometimes two or three carrying Utile children In their arms to tie burial ground to be laid sway la trenches with not ao much as a handkerchief over their poor llttta saffron colored dead faces This sounls \ciy exaggerated bnt I have not told l'i.lf the sad story. For the convenience of the travel ing public health certificates have been placed at the drug stores and hotels as well as at the clerk's office. It seems as If the very ssrfkta “swinging in tbs golden htuimook of prayer,” most ha*c wept as they looked down upon tho events of “those days that triad men's sonls.” My father, being a physician, was thrown Into tie most intimate con- fact wlti the sce .es of sorrow and from him I learned. Crisp county, to l-o formed from the lower half of Dooly county, wlth Cordele as the county seat It la stated that the plan Is that the house committee will report tbe foregoing new counties to tho House Thursday, while the Senate commit tee will make no teport lor the pres ent, felt will wait the offect of the House report and It it Is sufficiently strong tbe 8enai9' committee will probably make the some report. Chairman Hall of tho House com mittee favored reporting only two counties at the present time, namely Jenkins nnd Tift. It Is understood, however that the other members of the committee were agrlust him and wanted to report the entire eight There'will be a vigorous fight made on some of the counties Cfi the floor of the House and Senate. Not until both bodies pass ths hills will the new counties be created. The oppo sition may-prevent the formation of more than one or two counties at this session. •.» ONE HUNDRED BURIE0 IN CRASHING RUINS Albany, N. Y .
