Valdosta, Go" Sept. 16.—The coun
ty commissioners have fixed the tax
rate of Lowndes at_ $5.10 on the
$1,000, against $9.J0 last year. It
was expected that the rate would be
reduced to $4.10, which Is the low
est In twenty-five years, but the cost
of the Rawlings’ trial made It neces
sary to raise an extra $5,000. The
stenographers’ .fees alone amounted
to $980, the record being one of tbes
longest ever taljen In a criminal case

thousand pages, or about 400,000
words.

AT BIBB’S
From Saturlay’s Daily.
Yesterday evening Just before C
o'clock an alarm of fire was turned
in from the residence of Judge W. H.
Bibb, in Fletcherville. The depart
ment was out In an instant and the
big horses stretched out ' on their
long run. I When they reached the
scene of the excitement the fire was
discovered to have caught from a
stove pipe between the celling and
the roof. The water was not turned
on and a little of the chemical ex
tinguisher put a finish on the inci
pient blaze. The damage was mere
ly nominal.
