W. Watkins & Co. Nick Sampson Caught Again And Given 90 Days Nick Sampson, an alleged fruit merchant was fined |99 and costs and 90 davB on the streets yesterday in police court for violating - a city ordi nance by having in his possession liquor for sale. He was also bound over to appear before the county court for violating the state law ngalnst liquor selling. The case was certloraricd to the Superior Court by 4Jtorney W. H. Hammond. The certiorari bond is $500 and the com mitment bond is 31.000. This amount was put up by S. Sampson, the Broad street merchant. The arrest was made at 10 o'clock in the morning by Officers Martin and Stephens. They found in a back room of the tiger on lower Jackson a trunk containing 100 halt pint bot tles of whiskey wrapped ready for sale. This was confiscated and offer ed ns ovldenco in court. The court room was crowded yes terday rfflernoon to hear the trial. Roscoe Luke officiated tor tho city and \V. H. Hammond for the defend ant. Attorney Hammond moved for a contluunnce until next Monday. This was dented. He then demur red on tlio ground that the city or dinance under which Sampson was arrested wa3 Illegal. The demurrer was overruled and the case went to trial. A white man stVore that ho purchased a hnlf pint of liquor and paid thirty-five cents for it, yesterday morning. Two negroes testified to Blmtlar purchases yesterday morning. Another negro told of purchases at different times several weeks ago. No evidence was introduced by the defence. In giving the sentence of ninety days and 399 the mayor took occa sion to read a severe lecture to Samp son. He cnilcd attention to the fact that he had lust been convicted In Supelor Court and referred to tho overwhelming evidence. He stated that white and black, rich and poor, would receive the same sort of Jus tice in mnyor's court. He said that If there was anybody higher up in the social scale that was guilty of the same crime he would be punished with equal severity. He said he hoped to hare a chance at some who roosted higher up on the limb than Nick before his term of mayoralty was out. The defendant'; attorney will ask for a new trial on a certiorari. Judge Mitchell thinks there Is cause for another trial he will handle the matter In Superior Court In April. If the certiorari Is denied Sampson will work on the streots. He will al so appear before the county court in December. In the meantime until the matter Is settled he is out on a bond of 81,300. He was put In ths guard house immediately upon his arrest yesterday morning. This seemed to worry him tome as hereto fore In his arrests he has been al lowed - to run around and hunt up bond. After an hour's Incarcera tion he found bond for (500 which left him free until afternoon, and then S. Sampson signed the larger bond. 280-282 W Jackson St TbomaavilW O*. CUA N 3t/uuir HAS OPENED Turpentine Operators Will Begin to Accu mulate Spirits The box cutting season for naval stores men opened this week. The timber supply is growing less and less each ydar but there are still enough people interested in the busi ness to make the event one of im portance. There are still thousands of acres of good yellow pine in the wire grass country. Around Thom asville there is more virgin timber than any place else in all this section Much of thla belongs to northern people and they will never allow it to be cut for turpentine, but will pre serve it for shade and ornamental purposes. Tho lands have quadru pled In value during the last few years. Now nny stretch of timber near a railroad Is almost a priceless possession. Land with a growth of untouched plno Is worth $25 per acre a price undreamed of, back in the nineties. Many of tbe boxes that will be cut this year are back boxes, being cut in pines that have been boxed once or twice before and allowed to rest a few years. The original boxes grow up and new boxes arc cut again with fair results. The use of patent cups is also tbe means of extending the life ot the timber and ot increasing the output. Their use is becoming more general each season, and it is expected that in tho courso of a few years that laws will bo passod requiring their ex clusive use, and that no timber at nil will be boxed. If that were done tho timber supply of tho South would last Indefinitely. Agitation of this nature is now heard in some quarters, but those who favor it are In the minority. Th; financial results from the In dustry have been more satisfactory for the' past five years. In fact, the higher trend of prices began about six years ago and since that time the operators havo had every reason to be thankful they were engaged in the industry. The high water mark of prlcos was reached this year, when spirits went to 79 rets, the highest recorded prick since the Civil War. The Goddess of Fortune has indeed been profligate in her bestowal of fortunes. Everywhere dollars have been piled up. To specify: A few years a$o, certainly not more than five, a naval stores operator went out of Bryan county Into 'Florida. He had about a thousand dollars In money an old still and four or five mules and horses. He went into the business buying and taking leases on several thousand acres of'timber for turpentine purposes. This man sold his place and his timber leases a short time ago for a trifle more than 3100,000. The case of many, ex cept that In other cases the men en gaged In the business have made more money than tills man did. Boxing in Florida. The cutting In Florida is run on about the same schedule that it is here. The operators down there are cutting a great many hexes already,' though they will use all the cups they can get, buy, beg, steal or borrow, as tone naval stores man puts it. They realize that the use of the cups is the thing nnd that it Is money o use them in the long run. Steamship Hilda Goes Down on the Coast of France. Paris, Nov. 20.—Special reports received here of the wreck of the steamer Hilda which left Southamp ton on Friday night for 8t. Malo, France, show that steamer was total ly wrecked on Les Portes reef yes terday mording with the loss of more than a hundred lives. Evidently the captain mistook a buoy light for the light of St. Malo light house, owing to heavy weather. Seven bodies wearing life belts were found yes terday and the coast near St. Malo is covered with wreckage. $90,000.00 CAPITAL. Kirby Planing Mill is a Brag Industry of Thomas County. he Kirby Planing Mill arc about ready for their reorganization meet ing. Tbls prosperous lumber con cern was started in Thomasville less than three years ago with 318,500 capital. This was only very recently increased to-.837,000. Arrangements havo been completed Tor the Issuing of an additional 363,000 of stock, bringing tbe company up to 390,000 capitalisation, and one of tbe biggest things In Thomas county. Applica tion was published four weeks ago for permission to Increase the capi tal and this application will granted next week by Judge Mitchell. The increased capital was needed largely for the proper operation of saw mills and the purchase of tim ber. The lumber business has come to such a pass, that It Is practically impossible to obtain boards unless you taw them yourself. All the plan ing mills in the country that have not owned their own mills have experlenc ed the utmost difficulty In keeping themselves busy during the past six months. One of the purchases of the Kirby Company Is the Monroe and Pounds saw mill property between Thomks- ville nnd Boston. Tbe purchase In cludes some 2,500 acres of excellent timber. The company has also bought a quantity of timber four miles south of Boston, known as the Ramsey place, Where Murphy's saw mill is now cutting. Deals are be- Ingconsummated for still other tracts. Underthe new conditions the Kirby Planing Mill _wl!l be largely inde pendent of the ouslde world and will be In better condition than ever be! fore to serve their stockholders and the town.
