Rio Janeiro,. Jan. 23.—The cruis

bah.” The “Aqutdabah” blew up at
10:45 Sunday night. Nearly all
the officers were killed or Injured.
The dead number 196 and the In
jured 36.
Rio Janeiro, Jan. 23.—The Bra
zilian turret ship ‘‘Aqutdabah” has
been sunk at' Port Jaearepagua,
south of Rio Janeiro, as the result
of an explosion on board. Only one
officer was saved.
Four rear-admirals perished on
board the ‘‘Aqutdabah,” which had
been used for tbe accommodation of
a number Of supernumerary officers
and men attached to the flotilla es
corting the cruiser "Barroso.” Tbe
“Barroso” had on board the Minis
ter of Marine and his staff who were
Inspecting the sites proposed for a
new arsenal.
The explosion on the “Aqutdabah”
occurred in the powder msgaxlnes.
The vessel sank In three minutes.
Tifc “Aqutdabah” was of 4,950
tons displacement and 0,200 horse
power. She was built tn England
In 1885 at a coat of 91,725,000.
The armament consisted of four 9-
Inch guns and four 5-inch guns and
a number ot smaller guns. She
bad five torpedo tubes. Her crew
numbered 360 officers and men.
The next session of the legisla
ture will he petitioned to form n
new judicial circuit. The counties
that will be In the proposed cir
cuit are the old counties of Wilcox,
Irwin, Coffee and Clinch, and the
new counties of Turner and Crisp.
The movers for the • new circuit
say that it will facUltate business,
be of convenience to.litigants and-
lawyers, and will work a hardship
upon no one except the solicitors,
who are paid by the fee aysten^.
It is expected that there will be
little or no objection to the proposed
change.
The southern judicial circuit;
presided over by Judge Mitchell, Is
one of the largest and most impor
tant In the state. It Includes
Thomas, Brooks, Lowndes, Colqaltt,
Berrien, Echols, Tift and Grady.
The last two are new counties and
were, added the last session of the
legislature. This was the only cir
cuit to which two counties were
added and It would seem that the
Southern, If any, would come in for
relief on account of Its site and the
large demands made upon tbe time
of the Judge. The legislature will
probably rearrange the state, and
the new circuit may be one of those
formed.
