Doerun, Ga., February 22nd, 1906.
To the White Voter© of Colquitt County:
On this anniversary of him who was “First in War, first in peace, and first in thehearts of his Coun
trymen.” impelled by the earnest solicitations of many of my life long friends, I announce to jou that I
am a candidate for the office of Senator, from the 7th, senatorial district, composed of the counties of Col
quitt, Brooks, Grady and Thomas, in the next General Assembly of Georgia.
According to the rotation custom of long practice it is Colquitt’s time for the Senator next time and
I shall be subject to the primary called by your executive committee for the 3rd Wednesday, the 18th day
of April, next, and shall comply strictly with the rules and regulations laid down by them, and so far as in
my power lies, have my friends and opponents do the same. I take this means of getting my name before
the people because I have no newspaper like my opponent to advocate and advertise my claims.
Most all of the old people of the four counties have known me from my early youth, and my life has
been no hidden mystery, but an open book to be known and read of all men.
I shall visit the people around the county in their homes, in their fields, in their forests and talk with
them along the highways and byways and in the hedges. I shall go into the homes of the Hannahs and
Elkann^hs and the Elizabeths and Zackariahs, intothe homes where piety dwells and where no piety is
taught, and around their firesides talk to them of the principals of pious patriotism and virtuous citizenship
that whether I am elected or not the rising generation may hear of a higher life and a purer politics.
The twelve years I have resided in Colquitt county I have never asked for any office or had a public
dollar. Although often solicited by the kindness of the good people of my adopted home, and this time I
shall use all honorable efforts to be elected, and would rather be defeated than to disrespect the solicitations
I have received.
If elected I shall do all in my power to concerve the best interest of the common wealth. I stand
ready to discuss with my opponents anywhere in the county, at any time, the principals for which I stand
before the people in public. I shall be in Moultrie most of the time during the session of the Superior
court, the first and second weeks in April, and divide time with my opponents or their friends in day time,
or at night, in the court house upon any public question that the people may hear, and determine for them
selves, and I am going to urge the people to bestir themselves and register and vote, whether they vote fo
me or not, I want to seea full vote, especially of the farming class.
I know the time is short and all out door occupations in farm and field and forest are far behind,
but I shall urge the people that “Eternal Vigilance is the price of Liberty” and to come up to the help or
the Lord against the mighty, and lets have a full, fair and free expression of the will of the people.
Let us “Work while it is yet day for the uightcometh when no man can work” and I sincerely trust
that we shall have a clean primary ^ abstaining from all illegal means and management to obtain votes, and
all personalities and mud throwing, and if my friends or foes indulge in these things all I have to say is,
“See thou do it not!” for I am only clay in the potters hands and may become sticky, and may the great
and the good Alwise Father of us all guide me iu this work according to his will and wisdom and bring me
out from under this cloud.
JOSEPH P. SMITH.

Where Baking
Begins Right
The baking of the NATIONAL BISCUIT COMPANT
begins with right material, and every step there
after through the whole process of baking is
right. There is not one point of quality that
care, skill and modern bakeries could make better.
It is perfection itself—through and through.
It Ends Right
when it reaches your table untouched by strange hands,
untainted by odors. The quality, oven-flavor and freshness
are preserved in s dost and moisture proof package, distin
guished by the trade mark here shown. It always appears
in red and white on each end of the package and warrants
the perfect condition of th* contents. For example try
