Jackson Street Beil
Raised Ready For
Vitrified.
Preparatory to paving the lower
part of Jackson street Is being Ailed
In with red clay. It 13 desired to
raise the level of the street several
Inches before the vitrifld brick Is put
down. The clay used Is from the ex
cavation where the foundation of the
new Wright block will be construct-
ed.
The Joy of the people at this sign
of approaching good Is drowned in a
sense of present ill. Fond memory
with Its golden base, recalls thd mud
of other days. There Is Just one
thing which a combination of rain
and red clay makes. That Is nasty
mud. The street Is in a messy con
dition. The Tlmes-Enterprise tele-
nhone rings with alarming frequency
these days and a querulous voice at
the other end of the line en
treats the editor to look up'some of
the old files, and repeat some of the
talk about gondolas, mud pie facto
ries, drowning rats, imperilled geese
and other gentle knocks. Consider
them all made. Consider also the
sttement of the street force that It Is
necessary to raise the grade before
the paving Is laid. Consider also,
the words of Mrshal Stephens who
spoke saying. "I knew the people
would kick, but Is has to be done. I
