Georgta, a» well a* In the country
district!. The work hue been carried
on at the coat of considerable Sncrl-
Oce on the part of thoee directly en
gaged In It. The i|ate board ofliealtb
had to rely solely on It! general rev
enues to carry forward the Bummer's
field work, ho special appropriation
having been made by dhe legislature
for that purp'ose. A cottage In this
city was leased for the summer, and
has been the home' and laboratory
of the busy doctors. They are en
thuslastic over what they have dls-
' covered, however, and; realizing that
but a good beginning has been made,
are anxious to take up the work next
summer where It has lust beep left
off.
'House Fly Responsible.
Dr. Harris Is himself disposed to
charge the common house fly with
responsibility for the prevalence of
most climatic or slow fevers that oc
cur during the summer months In
many portions of the south. . He
thinks that If every house could be
properly scree nod, slow fevers would
disappear. He Is positive that there
would be no more malarial fever.
Inquiry next season, should the work
still be carried forward, will be very
largely bent In this particular direc
tion.
The local physicians of this entire
section of the state have co-operated
In every possible manner with the
state physicians, and have rendered
valuable services. The' railroads
have also manifested a friendly In
terest In the work, (laving without
solicitation provided free transporta
tion for all the physicians engaged
In the work.
SLOW FEVER
NOT MALARIAL
Important Findings oi
Health Board From
Albany Work.
Albany, Ga., Oct. 8.—(Special)—
The field workers of the state board
of health, who have been studying
the so-called slow fever In this part
of the state since the 15th of June,
have about completed their labors
for this season.
Greatly encouraged by what they
have accomplished, the physicians In
charge of the work hope to be per
mitted to further prosecute It next
summer. They have covered the ter
ritory from Fort Valley to Florida
and from the AtlanUc Ocean to the
Alabama line. They have discovered
much that will be of great value to
the medical profession, and It Justi
fies the hope that other Important
revelations will be made next year.
Dr. H. F. Harris, of Atlanta, sec
retary of the state board of health,
has had supervision of the field
work. The active work has, for hte
most part been In the bands of Drs.
F. W,. Bchnauss and L. T. Patlllo,
who have been tireless In their In
vestigations to which they have de-
' voted their talents.
Not Malarial.
The theory to which many medical
men have tenaciously clung that tho
slow fevers peculiar to the lower
part of Georgia and Alabama, and a
great 'portion of Florida, are' of ma
larial origin, has been clearly dls-
proven, through the summer's Inves
tigations of the board's field work
ers. Of the hundreds of cases stud
ied, not one yielded malarial germs.
There appears a distinct and invar
iable line which divides the malarial
from the slow fevers, and the Inqui
ries mado this season by Dr. Harris
and his asslsstants abundantly re
fute the theory that tho slow and ma
larial fevers are allied.
“But we find," asserts Dr. Harris,
"that there 1s a close and consistent
nflatlonshlp between the slow fever
and tho typhoid forms. In an over
whelming percentage of the cashs
we studied we found that either the
typhoid or the para-typhoid germ ex
isted. The para-typhold parasite Is
akin to and closely resembles the
pure typhoid germ,|but differs from business for 1906 shows a uniform
It In important respects. Contrary* advance of one-third over that, of
1905. We are referred to as the lar

celved from our retail business.
The safety of an Investment Ir
this stock Is assured by the stead;
substantial growth of the business
during the past three years, and the
commercial records of tho men com

' to what would seem the natural ex
pectation, we found that the para
typhoid germ, which Is less noxious,
and generally less to be feared than
the pure typhoid, occurs In slow fe
vers of the Worst type. Some of the
severest cases of slow fever under
our observation have developed the
presence of the para-typhold wtfho'ut
the more dreaded parasites while the
latter has existed In many of the
very much milder cases.
“In short we have developed that
slow fever Is never accompanied by
malarial complications, while either
the typhoid or the para-typhold
germ la always present. In the'few
cases' of slow fever Investigated In
. which the germs were not found,
we have reason to believe that the
failure to discover them was due to
limited facilities for Investigation In
th(Me particular cases. No such
failure existed where full facilities
were enjoyed.” ,
The physicians have been unable
during the summer to determine
with posttlvenes that It Is one
of the typhoid germs which causes
the slow fevers. The presence of
the germ Is not accepted as proof
. positive that It has been responsible
tor the origin of the sickness, and
investigation, which It is hoped to
make In future, will seek to remove
this doubt The cause of the slow
fever, and the means or destroying
that cause Is the goal to be aimed at,
and It must be admitted that remark
able headway has been made during
the Drat summer's work.
The work of the field force haa
been carried on In meet of the cities
and many of the hamlets of southern

Consul Covert reports that, accord
ing to a trait Importer of Lyons, the
American growers. and shippers
would do well to improve their
methods, of packing such fruits aa
apples, pears, peaches and the like,
placing them In layers In rectangular
boxes, well protected, each from the
other, by paper, rather than'contin
uing their shipments hi - barrels,
where the fruit In the lowdr layers
Is subjected to considerable pressure
and bruising from the weight of the
fruit above. Foreign buyers of
American fruits are not the only
anes who make this complaint as to
poor packing. Similar complaints
and consular suggestions come Into
the State Department every day from
widely scattered- points concerning
almost every Amerlcon export.' This
very thing, for Instance, has been re
sponsible In great pleasure for Amer
icas’ Inability to command more than
a small share of the cotton print
trade with the Orient. Germany
and England for the most par^ con
trolling thla field, and It would seem
to be high time for American ex
porters to think of these things.
