Atlanta, Oa., Nov.- 9.—Members
ot the executive committee ot the
Southern Cotton Association are in
Atlanta for the purpose of taking
deflnlte action on the proposal to
form an organization to be known
as “The Southern Cotton Company,”
with a capital stock of $100,000,-
000, and the purpose of which will
be to maintain a profitable price tor
cotton and combat the conspiracies
of Well street.
- It Is proposed to%itlld a chain ot
warehouses In the South In which
the cotton crop can be stored and
there held until Its Intrinsic value
can be realized In the-market. The
meetings ot the executive committee
are being held at the Piedmont Ho
tel behind closed doors.
At a meeting yesterday afternoon
a tentative character embodying the
foregoing features, was submitted
tor consideration. This charter pro
vides for the formation of a stock
company with the authorized capi
tal ot $100,000,000 and an Initial
capital of $10,000,000. The affairs
of the organization are to be In the
hands of a board of directors com
posed of thirty-five members, who
shall estimate the fair price for cot
ton and see that the price Is main
tained.
The men who are back of the
movement are known to be of the
highest standing in their respective
commlttles, and they seem thor
oughly In earnest. It Is understood
that the company will probably ope
rate In this manner: After its or
ganization has been definitely dl-
clded upon, a stock concern will be
formed among members ' of the
Southern Cotton Association and
others who ape interested In Its aim
and purposes. Bach share of the
stock will be worth at par $5 a value
which opens membership to the
smaller planters. It is probable
that If the board of directors decide
that cotton Is wtfrth 10 cents
pound and Wall Street puts It at 6
or 8 cents, the association will buy
In cotton, paying 10 cents per pound
and will then store It In the as
sociation's warehouses, where it will
be held until the price has reached
10 cents. : l*::j jgf.,';

Want Pure Food Law Modified. Says
• ‘ Injurious.
Washington, Nov. 8.—A delega
tion representing the sugar and mo
lasses interests ot Louslana and the
South Is here in an effort to obtain
a modification of the pure food reg
ulations as to the use of preserva
tives in the products named. The
pure food law prohibits the use of
sulphrlc and phosphoric aclds^ lime
and other substances In foodB on the
ground that they are unhealtbful.
According to the members of the
delegation, tbe straight enforcement
of this rule would work severe hard
ship on their Interests, for these
preservatives enter Into the manur
facture "of both sugar and molasses.
Tbe delegation assured Dr. t^Usy,
head of the Bureau of Chemistry,
that the acids were merely Inciden
tal to the manufacture and are com
pletely eliminated In the finished
products. If this contention can be
proved to the satisfaction of the
Department- of Agriculture It Is
likely that the Southerners will win
their point.
If your breakfaBt cup of coffee
Isn’t quite up to the standard these
days, you probably are a victim of
the adulterations practiced by a
gang of swindlers in New York, for
whom agents of the Department of
Commerce and Labor are now
searching. Complaint recently was
made by Scott Truxton, commercial
agent of the Porto Rican govern
ment at New York, that Inferior
grades of coffee were being shipped
from that port to Porto Rico, hilled
as peas and beans. He declared
that the coffee, as soon as It reached
Porto Rico, was further adulterated
and reshlpped to foreign countries
and the United States as high-grade
Porto Rican coffee. In this way the
coffee of Porto Rico has lost In rep
utation and gross violation of the
pure food law has resulted also.
