Baptist Against Alcohol.
The following Is an Interesting
extract from the report In the
Christian Index of the Georgia Bap
tist Convention:
“Rev. Alex W. Bealer offered an
amendment to the temperance re
port, calling attention to the India-
criminate sale of alcohol to negroes
and irresponsible whites In prohibi
tion counties, the only restriction
being the conscience of the drug
gist. It called for the committee on
the Nunnnlly temperance resolutions
to present this matter to the legis
lature and seek to have the law bo
strengthened that this business will
be put to an end.
"Junius Hillyer, of Rome, spoke
a few words for the temperance com
mittee, of which he was a member."
“The report as amended was
adopted.”

Col. Hopkins Thinks he Can Clear
Negro of Ugly Assault Charge.
Col. T. N. Hopkins, has been re
tained to represent William Robin
son, the negro who Is now in jail
here, charged with assault upon his
six year old daughter, Hattie. The
lawyer will demand a preliminary
trial and investigation immedfateiy,
and says that if the representations
that have been made to him are
true, his client has a perfect de
fense and will be released.
Col. Hopkins stated to a Tlmes-
Enterprise reporter yesterday that a
well known white man living in the
neighborhood Robinson did, is inter
ested in the defense of the negro,
and is atlsfled of his innocence of
the ugly charge. He arrived at this
conclusion after an investigation of
the circumstances.
The line of defense will be that
the injuries to the little girl occur
red while she was Bwtnglng In a
wire awing at the school house where
she attends school. It Is Bald that
she herself will swear that her fa
ther made no assault upon her. In
addition to this physicians are ex
pected to bring forth similar testi
mony, and the defense will attempt
to prove that the arrest of Robin
son was caused by hlB wife, with
whom he had'had trouble.
The case Is one that created great
Interest, anff Robinson’s capture
was brought about by a posse of
members of his. own race headed by
a brother of Robinson’s wife. There
was much Indignation among the
negroes at the nature of the alleged
crime and threats of violence wer,e
made, but these, happily, were not
carried Into effect.
