Gan Shells in Cotton.
While cleaning a gin at the Car
ter Co^^innery a few days ago,
Mr. A. B. Joiner made a discovery
that made him shudder. He found
three gun shells in the brushes of
the gin and one of them still loaded
showed signs of having been struck
by the saws. The shot in the other
two had been gnawed out, presuma
bly by the saws, but till retained too
powder and unsnapped caps.
Some fellow had let the shells get
into his cotton and they had been
taken up the elevator unobserved. It
is a thousand wonders that they were
found before serious damage was
done.—Meigs Review.
Twenty Applicants for
* Places *d Work at
Court bouse.
Examinations for teacher’s places
in the county schools of Thomas
county are now' in progress at the
court house. County School Com
missioner Maclean is assisted by Pro
fessors Stubbs and Ramsey. There
are three white applicants and seven
teen colored.
Mr. Maclean states that the school
In the county are all in splendid con
dition, and that arrangements have
been made for next year and good
teachers supplied to all. The ap
plicants jn the present examination
▼.'ill therefore go on the waiting list
This condition is fortunate and
rather unusual as there seems to be
a shortage of teachers all over the
state.
Examination papers wexe sent out
from Atlanta by State School Com
missioner W. B. Merritt to every
county in the state, with the excep
tion of Crisp, for applicants for
teacher’s positions in the public
schools of the state. There are
fifteen or twenty applicants in al
most every county and to one, Clarke
county, where the state normal
school is located, seventy examina
tion papers were pent.
Crisp county seems to be the only
one in the state which has not ex
perienced this shortage, there being
no application for examination ques
tions from that county.
PELHAM LIGHTS AND WATER.
City Will Build Plants For Both and
Ran Same.
Pelham, -Dec. 21.—The city admin
istration Is not resting idly over the
proposition for establishing for the
tor n a system of electric lights and
water works, but they are pushing
their plans with all reasonable dis
patch. Their efforts so far have
been to secure the services of a
thoroughly tellable and competent
civil engineer at a reasonable price
and looking toward this end they
have had a number of meetings and
conferences with engineers bidding
for the job.
ft v.a? 1 bought that a selection of
nn engineer would be made the early
port of this week, but it was neces
sary to postpone this matter for i
few days. The solertlon however,
wf’i he, In all probability mado this
week, and the matter of making:
maps, pinna, and laying out the com
ploto rystem will bo at once put into
Ms hands.
The Prat. stops taken in active
sfru'-tlon will be tho securing of a
sun able site and tho digging of an
Mg’ t or ten inch well from which
the water supply will bo secured.
The entire system will he built
with a view of enlargement as rapid*
I- as’the number of consumers will
warrant. An ice plant will bo built
and operated with tho other Improve
ment*.
After careful study of tho proposi
tion, and close analysis of what has
been accomplished by,similar towns,
the administration feels sure that by
Judicious and proper construction
and operation of the improvements.
It wiil he possible to give to the cit
izens of the town their lights and
water at teneonable rates, and that
the plant wiP be self-sustaining from
the very first, and will In the long
run, pay off their own bonds wlthou
