LESS GUITAR, MORE LABOR.
The loafing, lasy guitar playing
negro is an abomination in tho sight
of White people, and also to the bet
ter element of hit own v race. It
seems that' the ragrancy law* and
the rigllance of, officers cannot maka
him work. Of course there are
found to be good negroes And bad
negroes, just as there are good peo
ple and bad people In every race.
When the better class of negroes quit
encouraging this guitar-playing set,
and maintaining tieiy In Idleness,
when they withdraw their moral sup
port from tho ragrant, then we mey

to regulate the member* of their race
than can tbe laws.
Along this line some good,advice
wai given to tho negroes by Wil
liam D. Johnson, In his Emancipa
tion Day address. Johnson Is a well
educated man and seem* to have the
welfare of hie race at heart. He Is
presiding elder of this district of tbe
African Methodist, church, and his
words should have weight with the
colored people of the community. His
address will be printed In full lit the
Atlanta , independent! a negrp news
paper, and the yfolored people who
did not hear the speech ought to
read It or have it read to them.
The Tlmee-Enterprlse does not
agree with all the advice he gives,
but much, of It is good. Now let
the colored people show that they
can act as well as talk, by doing
some of the things he recommends.
He tells them to go to work, to
stay on the farm, and to be honest.
With this all of us agree, and wttn
the following words of hls in partic
ular:
Twenty years ago It was a pleas
ure to travel thropgh the country
and see the growing crops, the fields
looming with cotton, and corn, to
hear the call of the merry farmer
us he trudged up and down tho long
rows. In those halycon days there
was not so much sale for the guitar,
which has proven a curse to our race.
In those days no young men wore
seen strolling the country roads or
city streets with this tool of the dee-
11 hanged about their nocks. In
those days we did not have the mid
night carousals we have now. Our
people enjoyed better health then.
Wo as a race today need less guitar
and banjo picking, less of the two-
step polks, ‘nnd more of the applica
tion of all hands to honest work.
When we return to the old land
marks, set by our fatherse, we as a
race will have better health, truer
and purer women, manlier and
braver men." . jAlf,
WAR7 WELL HARDLY.
Orlm-vlaaged war is wrinkling hls

direction of Japan and America.
Alarmists have seised this opportu

ajar that la aurely In atore between
this great nation and the little brown
men. The newspaper boys have to
have something to write about. For
our part we expect to see n fight be
tween this nation and Japan about
the time that pigs circle In airy
flights about the water tower hero
In Thomasvtlle.
Japan has had a full meal of war.
The nation did wonderfully well In
its struggle with Russia, but It had
more than a sufficiency long before
tiie war closed, else It would never
have granted peace on such favora
ble terms to the Slav. War? There
