LUMBER CONDITIONS IMPROVED
Legal Proceedings Have Helen vc<l
Co B grstlon at Freight Centers.
Savannah, Jan. It.-—Though there
were really no developments In the
local lumber world during the past
week which might be regarded as
"startling" several matters of uni
versal Interest to the lumber trade
came np for attention. As bad been
expected the Injunction cases Insti
tuted by The Southern tPne Com
pany, Sax Lumber Company andC.
8. Hlrxeb and Granger A Lewis in
stituted to restrain the Atlantic
Coait Line from removing lumber
consigned to the plaintiffs In the ter
minal yards came up.
Later, according to direction of the
court. Injunction proceeding^ were
Instituted against the Central Rail
road In an effort to compel them to
accept the ears of material tender
ed them. . Following this action the
AUantlc Coast Line was at liberty
to discharge all cars In Its yards since,
the temporary restraining order had
bpen dissolved, yet this was not done
since all cars with the exception of
those consigned to one firm—South
ern Pine Co., had been previously re
ceived by the Southern Pine Com
pany through their attorneys against
the Central. Following this move
the Southern Pine Company through
their attorneys against the Ceiftral
road again appeared before Judge
Qeorge T. Cann, and were successful
In securing another injunction re
straining the defendant from a fur
ther enforcement of the embargo or
refusing to "accept, receive, and
transport cars of lumber and from
further discrimination against the
petitioners."
These cases are fraught with un
usual interest to the trade, and the
fln-1 outcome will, of course, be
watched with great Interest.
That the legal proceedings against
the fomls has been the direct means
of greatly bettering the local con
ditions cannot be gainsaid. The ser-
\
vice has proven better by far; cars
have been placed a deal more
promptly; and the general outward
movement' by the regular coastwise
vessels--those especially on ' which
the embargo were placed—have pro
ven generally more satisfactory.
Though there were a great many
Inquiries on the local market In the
past week, the actual demand show
ed but slight Improvement. At tills
time tho general advance expected by
the trade has not materialized, and
In the meanwhile the bulk of In
quiry li far the larger dimensions.
Numerous mills of the Interior which
closed down before the holidays have
nut yet resumed operations. Care
In every Instance are badly needed.

Washington, Jsn. 14.—The Presi
dent today sent to the 8enate a spec
ial message regarding the Browns
ville incident, giving additional evi
dence gathered by Assistant Attor
ney-General Purdy and Major Block-
som, who were tent to Texas to In
vestigate the affair.
The president submitted with the
message various exhibits. Including
maps of Brownsville and Fort Brown
and bullets picked up on Brownsville
street! - . The president declares that
the evidence is positive that the out
rage or August 23 was committed by
sonio of the colored troops that have
been dismissed, and that some or all
of the members of the three com
panies had knowledge of the deed
and shielded the guilty ones. He de
clares that few It any of the Soldiers
could have been Ignorant of what oc
curred.
The message further says that that
part ot the order barring these sol
diers from all civil employment un
der the government has been revoked
but the discharged troops are forever
barred from re-enlisting In the army
or navy, and says there Is no doubt
as to the President's constitutional
powers.
Secretary Taf’s report giving tho
testimony of the witnesses was trans
mitted with the message.

It would also be difficult to find a

him of a one-hundred-and-ten-foot

him for ten years. A reporter In
