HURRAH FOR COLD.
If there la any rule against talk
ing about the weather a great many
people violated U yesterday, and
bare been breaking it all this bright
New Year of HOT. But why not
talk about tbe weather for there is
nothing that has a greater effect
upon. health, finance, commerce and
agriculture than that same weather.
For the first three weeks of the
year the weather wae the mildest
that hue been known in yean. All
records were broken. The regular
temperature hat beep ten degrees to
twenty above the normal, and the
oldest Inhabitants has been given a
chance to declare time after that he
never knew such a January before,
proverbs were worked overtime, and
the gootebone prophits were at sea.
Grass and trees were fooled by old
Sol, and put on tbelr summer clothes.
Easter lilies blossomed and tbe
peach trees swelled and bndded.
Just as every one was wondering
when It would end along comes a
cold snap and puta to rout the theor
ies of those who had been claiming
Hint tbe Arcturlan spring Had ar
rived and that we would have the
same mild weather for 1800 years.
Never was a cold spell more wel
comed than this one. For be It
known that the warmth Came with
out herald or warning, and the peo
ple were not prepared for It. The
merchants had laid In their usual
supplies of winter goods, and in
stead of finding buyers for them the
Senator Tillman seems to keep on calls were for dimity, thin fabrics,

Tho weather lncked the tang and
brace of nccustonied wlntor, and n
feeling of Ilstles3ness pervaded the
frames of tho folke. Then too tho
farmers were up against a serious
problem. Thomas county raises lots
of hogs and ninny of these were
slaughtered when the Christmas cold
map came along. That lasted but
a few days, and then the warmth
came,-, ruining the meat. Since that
time thore has been no weatber cold
enough -for the porker to squeal his
last. He has finished the hinder
patches and la making huge Inroads
on the corn crib. So the funner Is
praying for this cold to continue.
Therefore nil classes welcotnod
with the hearty hundshake, the call
of old Boreas, and hopo that he wilt
stay for a week. The only people
who frown nt his approach are the
Northern visitors who came here in

But even they will not complain. Tho
South Georgia cold, accompanied by
bright sunshine and pine breezes Is
not kin to the northern chill, damp. |

Hurrah for the cold weather. May
It wave for ninny days.
