WASHINGTON. Jan. 18—(Spe-
clal.) Judge James M. Griggi, of
Oeorgla, has Introduced in the houae
and will urge upon the committee on
poatofflcea and poatroada, of which be
la a member, a bill to Increate the
aalarlea of rural letter carriers from
860 per month to $900 per year./
Judge Origga feels that the present
aalary paid rural carriers Is load
quale compensation for the service
J, W. WATKINS & CO-
230-32 W. Jackson St Ihomasvllle, Ga.
rendered. In adltlon to the time re
quired of the rural letter carrier. Is
the equipment necessary .for the
prompt delivery of the mails by car
riage or on horseback. It Is pointed
out that after a carrier baa paid for
*•-: of hla team, or for the feed
of his horse if he owns bis own ani
mal or team, there la very little left
to meet the original Investment for
the horse or to reward the Individual
for his services.
There are probably thirty bills pen
ding In the houae, introduced by the
members from various states, the oh
Ject of all of Which Is to raise the sal
aries of rural carriers. The limit of
Increase Is all the way to one thou-
said dollars. As Judge Grlfgs points
out however, It will probably be bet
ter to have a reasonable snm like
$900, which the committee would be
more Inclined to favor, than to Intro
duce a measure calling for higher sal
ades. but which there Is no possibil
ity of having the committee approve.
It Is a question of half a loaf being
better than no bread.
Representative Orlggs, In further
discussing the rural delivery service
declared his opposition to the parcels
post, which, he said. Is working an
Injustice, upon the rural letter car
riers, and making them expressmen
as well as letter carriers.

J. for they do certainly know how
to fight Details were lacking as
well as many of the feathers from
other parts of the body of the
