DAMAGED TIMBER.
Storm YVas Purely Local, and Did no
Dunmge Elsewhere,
(From Wednesday’s Dally)
Tbo topic of conversation on’the
streets yesterday was the storm of
Monday. It seems that the high
wind was purely local In character.
No damage was reported at any oth
er point In Georgia. The principal
sufferers were the people about
three miles from town on the Irwln-
vllle road. Mr. O. C. Cleveland, who
was serious))’ Injured was -doing well
yesterday. His barn Is a complete
wreck. The Davis barn was un
roofed and n calf killed there. On
Mr. J. F. Knapp’e farm a number of
trees were blown down, and timber
all through that vicinity was laid
low. Some outhouses on the Welch
farm wero blown to pieces, and an
other calf was killed by the falling
barn at the Herring place.
The storm took a southwest nnd
northeast direction. It entered tbe
corporate limits Just below tbe col
ored cemetery, and went across town
leaving at tbe golf links on Jack-
son street. The storm was denomi
national In character. It destroyed
tbe colored Methodist church, and
blew down the big chimney of the obviously the farmers could not se-
PI7RE FOOD LAW..
It U- Giving Meat Shippers at Bos*
ton a n d Quitman Trouble,.
Much comment has been caused ot
late by the fact that the pure food
law has affected the meat Industry
of Boston and Quitman. Mayor J.
B. Rountree has been Investigating
the caae, and will endeavor to secure
some amendment to the law. This
was discussed at length In thi: Tlmos-
Enterprise several weeks ago. Ad
ditional Information comes In the
folowing dlsatch from Quitman;
"The pure food law has given
the meat Industry In Brooks county
a black eye. The marketing season
Is now at Its hight. Several days
ago a government Inspector arrived 1
here and Instructed the dealers that
they were violating the law In ship
ping meat not officially Inspected
when slaughtered. Of course none-
of the meat has been Inspected.
"Under the law a farmer can ship
hls meat to any point If he Blgns an
affidavit certifying to Its wholesome
condition. Heretofore the fanners
have oold to dealers here who hand
led It at wholesale. These dealers
cannot ship to any point outside the
ctntls under the new law. As fully
60 per cent of the meat produced
here Is sold In Florida the effect on
the local market Is disastrous.
“This week the local dealers have
been obliged to refuse' a great deal
of meat and It Is up to the farmer
to try to dispute of it Individually,
so the industry Is for the time being
rather demoralized.
"The Inspector said the only sec
tions affected by the new law ahe
South Georgia, and the sections
around Smithflotd, Va„ and Mur-
phreesboro, Tenn. These are the
only Southern sections which pro
duce great quantities of bacon for
the market.
The law supposed to protect the
people from the packing houseB
therefore really protects tbe packing
houses from competition of Indiv
idual producers.
"Brooks county sells annual)' over
250,000 pounds of cured bacon and
the Brooks county hams havo long
been famous. Every farmer raises
meat to sell and the big farmers
have cold storage facilities and raise
thousands of pounds. Only last -svsak
E. J. Young sold 16,000 pounds
here and Avera Bros, sold 12,000.

Capt. C. M. Strong, the United
States Weather Bureau official says
that the storm Is officially catalog
ued as a small tornado. It could
not be called a cyclone as that name
Is applied only to storms ot general
area and extent, while this was
purely focal. Nor could it be refer
red to as a hurricane, for that would
mean a velocity of more than, *0
miles per hour, from the wind. The
maximum velocity In town wai 40
miles, though In the country where
It created the most havoc the force
must have been much- greater than
that. Capt. Strong was watching
the barometer during the blow and
says It displayed all the symptoms
of a tornado. He says that had he
