BainbrIdge is Buffering from n
teed famine. After the twenty-sixth
there w ill he a'drink famine.
Governor Terrell offers a colonel
cy on his stair to the flrsf Georgian
who will raise grapefruit. Wants
to hand him a lemon.
The only professional stone cot
ter who ever went ta congress goes
out of olflce this week. It takes
an Ice cutter to stay in congress.
We would liked to have heard
our old friend Joe Hill Hall in the
(United States Senate when the 1111-
busterlng tactics against the pfilp
subsidy bill were brought Int^ play.
The ultima thule of some politi
cian’s xlcsjres seems to be the muz
zling of the press, and bills to this
end are contluually being introduced
before legislatures and congress. It
cant be “did,” gents.
Senator Spooner has resigned his
THExPIXE CROAKER.
There have always been people to
j cry “wolf.” Sometimes tbe wolf
comes along and sometimes It does
n’t. There are so many prophets
of gloom that the people have learn
ed to discredit them. Someone is
always “viewing with alarm" the
i prosperity of the country and point
ing out that a stringent period is
bound to follow. Someone is always
I seeing microbes^in the air and pre
dicting epidemics. Carried to 'Its
last analysis some one is always pre
dicting the end of the world.
Those people who cannot enjoy
the present but have to worry about
the future take pains to fret about
what South Georgia will do when
the pine trees have been turpentined
and sawed. The lumfcer and naval
stores are now at the height of the
development and are making peo
ple rich everyday. In the natural
courbe of events they w ill peg out
some day during this century, and
“what next,” Is the question.
Truth to tell, that never fretted
us much. The land Is still there
you know, and South Georgia land
will raise good crops. The farmers
like everybody else are applying in
telligent methods to their work.
Careful fertilization, scientific rota
tion of crops, deep plowing and the
like will do wonders. This will
make South Georgia a great agricul
tural region even after the plues
have passed.
But perha3p the pines will never
pass completely. There will always
be a second growth, or if not a sec
ond, a third. * At present these sec
ond growth pines are recognized as
good-for-naught. But some use will
doubtless be discovered for them.
They will of necessity be used for
lumber when nothing better is avail
able. |
A correspondent in the Macon Tel-{
egraph opens up an Interesting field.
He asks If the short-leaf or second I
growth may not be used for turpen
tine making. * To this the editor of
the Telegraph replies that some one
Is trying the experiment a few miles
out of Macon, and that there Is no
